Mangalore, Mar 26: Student’s Islamic Organization of India (SIO) national president Suhail K K said on Thursday March 26 that students need to indulge in social affairs of the society. He said that denying political freedom in campuses is against democratic values.
Addressing media persons at the Hotel Goldfinch, he said that a campus is the breeding centre of democracy. “It is quite unfortunate that campus politics has turned out to be destructive in nature. SIO views student politics as an effective tool for establishing a democratic environment and creative discussions and debates on various social issues”, said Suhail.
In reply to a query Suhail said that the Raghavan Committee Report on the menace of ragging in educational institutions should be implemented. “SIO will take measures to curb the menace of ragging in campuses. It has been conducting various programmes since the past 25 years against such evils. The organization has not been confining itself to being an Islamic organization”, he added.
Suhail pointed out that the SIO strongly disagreed with moral policing. At the same time it refers to a romantic relationship before the marriage as an illegal activity and opposes alcoholism. “Terrorism and other untoward incidents have nothing to do with religion. It is all about political gain”, he said.
“SIO activists and supporters contest elections not on glamour and money power but on clear ideological grounds. The organization has proved strong enough to create a breakthrough in student politics and to be the pulse of the campus and student community”, said Suhail.
Regarding the global economic slump, he said thousands of youths and students have become jobless. “The Milton Friedman model of capitalism has come to an end. The recession is an obvious result of a financial system built on reckless speculation and interest. It is high time the new generation thought of an economic system based on Islamic principles which is against speculation and interest”, he added.
SIO state president Shoukath Ali K, state west region president Shabeer Ahmed, secretary Ifthikar Ahmed, public relations secretary Mansoor C H, and Nisar Ahmed were present at the press meet.
