Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Apr 29: Government bus employees unions have given a call for protest by way of strike on Labour Day May 1, demanding implementation of revision of pay as per sixth pay commission recommendations from April 2018 itself. Because of this, there is likelihood of passenger traffic being hit that day.

All Karnataka State Road Transport Labour Federation general secretary, A B Borashetty, said that employees of Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation, Northwest Transport Corporation, North-East Transport Corporation and Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation will be participating in the protest.

He said that a symbolic protest on this demand was held during October last, and the officials had promised to meet the demands of the employees. Based on the promise, the protest was withdrawn, he said, pointing out that the demands have not been met so far. Therefore, he said that the employees will begin protesting commencing from Labour Day.

Borashetty said that some of the demands of the employees were, transfer to places of their choice, implementation of sixth pay commission from April last, exemption from punishment to drivers and conductors in non issue, non collection cases, increasing of daily and other allowances to employees, implementation of pension scheme as applicable to government employees etc.

Strike is only meaningful if their demands are considered.

Let us see it in the perspective of the drivers... They do double shifts sometimes triple shifts... Yes.. their pay comes on time since the organization is one of our Government. Yes KSRTC has one of the best track records in our country for the upkeep of their vehicles and depots (compared to the entire country ours is the best).

I have worked closely with these drivers and they tell me... sir yenheludu naav beligge shift mugiskondu eega nim duty .. punha rathre bengaluru hortevu... this is how hard they work. Its ignored because our Indian crowd thinks driver is a peasant's job and think lowly of them.

I say respect them because when they work so hard to keep us safe on the road, help us reach our destination on time everytime is a Talent and their standard of safety for our sake. A driver is an important part of our economy. If he didn't do his job, you would miss your meeting, next connecting international domestic flight, an important exam etc.,

I must say KSRTC has state of the art reservation software facility and upgradation of buses from time to time. When there is a budget for this. I can say with no hesitation the government must have a fair budget for their drivers as well.

Let's face it. Without the drivers the investment on the facilities is worthless. This may reflect in my bus fare. But it is fair if the pay goes the person in whose hands I put my life in everytime I travel the Long haul and reach my destination safely, fresh and ready for my days work.
