Mangalore, Apr 1: At least 60 families were left in tears after their homes were bulldozed for being illegal constructions.

The police and corporation officials turned a deaf ear to the pleas of the residents and continued moving things out of the homes to be taken down.

The incident took place at Rajeev Nagar in Shakti Nagar.  The 60 houses which were built without permission from the city corporation were mostly temporary structures though there were some which were permanent constructions.

“These houses were constructed without permission in this place. There is no option for constructing houses as this place is reserved for Ashraya houses”, said Balakrishna Gowda, town planning officer, Mangalore city corporation, who was leading the operation.

“In this nine acre area, 210 houses are allotted while the rest of the place is illegally occupied. We had informed them when they started the construction”, he added.

The residents of these houses were poor people and workers. One of them is a widow who spent her savings on building her house here.

The workers lived in temporary structures built with bamboo and plastic. But three to seven houses were built better and at least two of them had concrete terraces.

The displaced people alleged that the local corporator supported them when building their houses. They said that they were assured by the corporator that the houses will be legalized through ‘Akrama Sakrama’ scheme.

Corporator Mariyamma Thomas who arrived at the spot two and a half hours after the demolition began said, “It is the bad nature of corporation officials and beating up of the poor. When the administration failed to provide or allot houses, poor people occupied the area themselves but a demolition drive is not the solution and it must be legalized.”

She said that a person named Ronald Paul had cheated all these people by claiming to be a former military officer and the land was allotted to him. Thomas said that the man had earned money by permitting them to build a house.

What a shame on Mangalore City Corporation. Where the Corporation is formed to look-after the welfare of the citizens, they are doing quite the opposite. They create more and more destitudes and homeless people. What right the Corporation has got to demolish the homes without providing them with alternative shelter? What so many men and women are doing simply posing for the photograph? Why don't they get together and bash the bulldozer driver and the police? with the cooperation of the Corporator? like the Srirama Sene who bashed the girls in the pubs?

'as this place is reserved for Ashraya houses' What does this mean? So, when someone is legal to build Ashraya houses on this plot, why can't these people who got no 'Ashraya' from Govt. in the past can have their own houses..?? Even strictly lawful country like U.S gives an option for illegal immigrants to be immigrant based on situation... MCC couldn't allow these poor people to legalize their shelters or provide options?? Its sad to see kids in school uniform & not knowing where to go .. really sad.. Laws are important but there is something called judgement on humanity grounds that overrides everything else.. I am shocked that MCC is so irrational in decision making.

Government has the right to demolish those illegal construction. I am requesting the responsible authorities to allot  permanent houses for those people who are homeless now.

Why is that the common and the poor are always targeted??? Builders, politions and the rich people are constructing their shopping mall, buildings and the lavish bunglow's and even their gardens on the public property. And there is nobody to stop them.

Rules are equal to all then why are the rich are not questioned when they are breaking the rules? Now where is Sri Ram Sene? Where is Bhajarang Dal? Where is Sangh Parivar? For whome is our government is for?

Instead of being with this people who are suffering, instead of helping them, they are looking for new ways to cause disturbances and distructions in the society. My humblest request to these groups to engage themselves in the constructive works not distructive.

Lalo's kids are fake doctors Many building in mangalore,am sorry all over India are built in unethical manner(short life) to make more money. Large number of vehicles run on the road without safety and pollution issues been followed.(RTO takes bribes to provide the authorization ) Crimes everywhere, there are 95% chances of bomb blast in any part of India at anytime. Poverty level increasing, more jobs lost day by day, farmers committing suicide, corruption level to the highest grade(satyam online), Infrastructure(amount sanctioned 10 years back) but still driving on the same road built by British and Indian slaves, Mainly communalism between HINDU and MUSLIM and CHRISTIANS, this problem is never been solved( Or is it never wanted to be sorted out by our leaders) Forgetting all these issues these  MCC is behind 60 houses out million illegal buildings. I feel sorry for these people. But can help them in some ways. People who comment in daijiworld and who read the news, media i got an idea Shall we gather some money and give it to the MCC to stop this demolishing process.I think this would be a great help

This is what India is, Corrupt politicians, underworld don's, builders build their own house and houses for others in an illegal property. But not a single MCC  have even thought of bulldozing their compound wall.Coz they don't have so much of guts in them to do it.

But when it comes to these poor, helpless people every one(POLICE,GOVT and all the legal actors) are ready to demolish it with short period of time.

Hello Mr. Mayor of Mangalore can't you see many illegal building on the way to your house. why are you behind these poor jobless, food less people.I wish i had power to stop this. Thanks daiji.

It is very sad indeed, but the law has to prevail. Now the question remains, what happenes to the illegal buildings, built by Builders with Underworld money. Mr Shukla should bring down the building next to Ganesh Bazar which is illegal, built without set back norms, and been served notice by MCC, couple of years back.

I think Mariamma Thomas should perceive this case as a Corporator. If She don't take action, then Her tears in Shaktinagar incident will become Crocodile tears.

These houses may be their everything, built out of their swet, may be their life long saving. Where was MCC when these people started constructing? Was MCC officials sleeping? Couldn't MCC stop them before they spent everything? Too cruel. I feel some one should approach court to take action against MCC officials for not stoping these illegal construction in the initial stage itself.

While I support the drive to enforce legal construction, the move should be done with empathy. The displaced people are an important part of our society. I feel for their plight. The picture shows displaced, helpless women and children. My heart comes out for them. The city corporation should first focus on enforcing legal construction and zoning guidelines for large buildings rather than take away shelter from the lower economic rung of the society.
