Kundapur, Apr 3: A person drowned in a rivulet at Kandlur Alivinabagilu, near the Arabian Sea, as he was trying to escape from the policemen who raided his house at about 1.30 am on Thursday April 2, on a tip-off that some member of the family was involved in illegal transportation of cattle.
The deceased has been identified as Mattin Karani (23) son of Karani Ameer Saheb, a resident of Kowrady village, near here.
Sources informed that Mattin Karani fled when he saw the policemen led by sub-inspector Satish Kumar, and jumped into the rivulet nearby. The policemen following him found Mattin Karani gasping for breath and pulled him onto the river bank.
Though he was given first aid at Chinmaya Hospital, he was later taken to the Government Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Meanwhile, Karani Ameer Saheb, father of the deceased, lodged a complaint at the police station here alleging that the sub-inspector is a follower of RSS ideology who had threatened Ameer Saheb six months ago.
Saheb alleged that the policeman had claimed that he would kill them in a future encounter and abused him. He alleged that his son Matti Karani was murdered and dumped into the river.
The local unit of the Popular Front of India (PFI) and Souharda Samiti held a press conference here on Thursday April 2, to condemn the tragic incident and demanded the suspension of Satish Kumar.
Both local units of PFI and Souharda Samiti called for a protest at 3.30 pm on Monday April 6 at Shastry Circle here to urge the police department to suspend the police official.
