Mangaluru, May 8: As the water level at Thumbay dam on which the city is dependent for drinking water supply continues to be worrisome, the city will go without the corporation water today too. This is in tune with the water rationing system adopted in the city, and there was no water supply from Thumbay on Tuesday too. People who live in the end point of the supply system and in areas that are on a higher altitude are particularly finding it hard to get their quota of water.
People had problem coping with shortage of water. As per the system, water supply which was cut off at 6 am on May 7 will continue to be suspended till 6 am on May 9. Water supply will be maintained for 96 hours thereafter till 6 am on May 13.
On an average, storage level at the dam is going down by five cm every day. The water level which stood at 4.38 meters on Monday morning reached 4.34 meters by the evening. On Tuesday, the water level further came down to 4.27 meters. The administration has said that the system of supplying water for four days and suspending it for two days will continue till May 21.
Rain report
Several parts of Dakshina Kannada district received some rain on Tuesday afternoon, whereas almost the entire district experienced cloudy weather the whole day. Places like Kinnigoli, Kotekar Beeri etc received drizzle on Tuesday morning. A few places like Yeyyady, Derebail and Konchadi in the city also got light showers. Sajipa village got some drizzle.
Punjalkatte, Venoor and Moodbidri got light rainfall with places like Naravi in Beltangady taluk also getting some rains. As water, flow of which was blocked near the new bridge at Kelagine Pete at Naravi due to stacking of boulders, the water flowed on the road, creating problems for the road users. A number of villages and also Puttur town got good rain on Tuesday afternoon for about an hour.
Kadamakallu rivulet near Subramanya experienced floods. This happens to be the area where huge landslides had happened last year, and huge logs which were washed away by the floods had demolished bridges.
Cloudy weather is continuing in the coastal region.
