Karachi, May 8:Thirty four Indian fishermen have been arrested by Pakistani authorities for allegedly straying into the country’s territorial waters, a security official said on Wednesday.
The incident happened nearly a week after Pakistan released 60 prisoners from India as a goodwill gesture.
They were arrested by personnel of the Pakistan Maritime Security Agency (PMSA) during an operation on Tuesday and have been handed over to the police.
As reported in PTI, a Pakistan Maritime Security Agency spokesman said, "They will appear before a judicial magistrate who will decide on their judicial remand.”
India and Pakistan frequently arrest each other’s fishermen who accidentally enter into their waters due to nonattendance of any proper technology to confirm the coastline border between India and Pakistan near Sir Creek in the Arabian Sea.
Nearly a week before, Pakistan released 55 Indian fishermen and five civilians as a 'goodwill gesture' amidst tension between the two countries after the Pulwama terror attack.
Including the 250 Indian fishermen released from the Landhi and Malir jails in Karachi last month, the Pakistan Foreign Ministry had earlier confirmed that it has released a total of 360 Indian fishermen in three phases in April as a goodwill gesture.
