Dubai, May 18: In a new initiative, the municipality of Dubai has asked cafeterias and restaurants in the emirate to mandatorily display the calories in ready-to-eat food items on their menus.

Director general of Dubai municipality, Dawood Al Hajri in a circular to food outlets stated that the initiative is to make consumers aware of the nutritional value of the food they eat as part of a five-year national nutrition agenda for a better life.

The declaration of calories will enable the consumers to choose food that suits their health needs. The director has said that the municipality encourages restaurants to provide nourishing and tasty food to consumers in order to achieve the municipality’s vision of developing a sustainable and happy city.

The municipality is keen to encourage food outlets to provide balanced and healthy meals to improve health of the community and to prevent diseases that are caused by unhealthy food habits.

The municipality has stipulated for implementation early November as the deadline for restaurants, cafes and cafeterias with more than five branches and January 2020 for all other eateries and catering outlets.
