Mangalore, Apr 22: The weather turned gloomy in the city as six members of the Serrao family, who died in a tragic car accident near Hubli, were taken on their final journey on Wednesday April 22.
The somber scene of the coffins accompanied by thousands of mourners from around Mangalore, Udupi, and other places left an indelible impression on those present.
Michael Francis Serrao (50), his wife Anita Serrao (45), children Sweety Serrao (12) and Shawn Serrao (2), and Michael’s brothers Thomas Serrao (38) and Clifton Serrao (32), were killed on Tuesday April 21, after the Santro car in which they were traveling was hit by an ore-laden truck, killing all six on the spot.
As the coffins were taken from the Serrao residence near Kana around 3.00 pm, everyone present there was grief-stricken with not a single dry eye. It was indeed poignant to see the mortal remains of Shawn and Sweety kept in a single coffin.
Bishop of Mangalore Aloysius Paul D’Souza led the prayers for the departed souls and offered the funeral mass with parish priest Antony and several other priests from various parishes.
Michael’s parents Rita and Francis Serrao who participated in the funeral, were totally shattered and understandably, nothing could comfort them though the Bishop, priests, and the huge crowd tried to console them by offering condolences individually.
