Mangalore, Apr 24:
The Dakshina Kannada district special squad has arrested six persons who were identified as accomplices of underworld kingpin Ravi Poojary, in connection with murder case of advocate Noushad Kashimji. They also recovered the weapons, vehicle and cash from the accused.

The arrested have been identified as Dinesh from Nayataru Village in Beltangady taluk, Rithesh and Ganesh, residents of Kodikal in the city, Pratap from Kavoor, Subrahmanya from Kadri and Shiva Prakash, a resident of Urwa Store. Police said that Dinesh, Rihesh and Pratap were directly involved in the murder while three others assisted them in carrying out the task given by Ravi Poojary.

According to the police, three of the accused have been history cheeters and have been facing several cases in the city.  Rithesh has been booked in a murder case at Kodikal and in a few other cases under Urwa police station limits. Pratap is also involved nn the same murder case, while, Ganesh was accused in another murder case under the same police station limits The Police squad also seized three 9mm pistols, 08 rounds of ammunition, Rs 3.5 lac in cash, Maruthi 800 car, three mobile phones and one gold chain. Sources said that investigation is also being initiated to verify the  criminal antecedents of the other accused.

Addressing media persons here on Friday April 24, Gopal B Hosur, deputy inspector general of police, Western Range explained that teams were sent to Mumbai, UP, Bangalore, Goa and other places after collecting information from forensic and ballistic examination of Naushad's body, accounts of eyewitnesses and other technical data. The team nabbed Dinesh in Beltangady after obtaining evidence on his involvement in the case. Rithesh and Pratap were arrested at Kodikal in the wee hours on April 24. The three others were also nabbed from city for assisting the assailants.

"On the evening of April 9 Dinesh called advocate Naushad on phone from a PCO booth on the pretext of the case pertaining to underworld element Rashid Malabari. Noushad came out of his house to meet Dinesh. At that time Ritesh and Pratap who were waiting near the flat attacked him with firearm and when it failed after firing two rounds they used magazine end of the pistol to cause grievous injuries to him on the head," Hosur said.

The six accused and the seized property would be produced in the court on April 24. Efforts are on to nab the main accused and Ravi Poojary with the help of state CoD, state intelligence and the central agencies, he said. He added the motive behind the murder has been proved to some extent. The case has been just detected and investigation is on.

Legal Action against Allegation

Hosur said that the allegation from certain quarters regarding the involvement of police officers in the murder of Naushad was done with malafide intention to demoralize and mislead the investigation. The department would take legal action against them.

Rs 50,000 Rewards

Hosur announced a reward of Rs 50,000 to the teams and informants for unearthing the murder case. About 30 police officials and 150 personnel had been deployed in this connection. The teams led by Udupi DySP Jayanth Shetty, DySP Dharmaiah, DySP Harischandra, N R Mukri, Venkatesh Prasanna, Srinivas Raju, CPI Ganesh Hegde worked under the guidance of DIGP Western Range.

Special Squad

Hosur announced that they would constitute a strong force of over a hundred young and skilled police men to tackle the underworld activity.  Special arms and ammunition and equipments are being procured for this purpose.

The department would call meeting of the personnel of PCO, Cyber Café, coin booths, STD booths since many of the underworld elements use these mediums for communication.

He also said that many of the advocates and agents in city are involved in receiving black money which has come to light during the investigation.

Superintendent of police Subramanyeshwara Rao also present at the Press meet.

Dear Susie/Kevin, The face of the culprits or rather the accused is covered by police because if they have to be identified in an identification parade in the presence, then their faces cannot be shown in the public. This is requirement of the Law.

Navin Sinha, the police can make efforts to apprend Ravi Poojary/Dawood Ibrahim, the same way as local goondas are. They have training for the same. Those out of the country is a bit difficult though. I am only highlighting that in a given case like the lawyer''s murder there are many doubts being raised by emenient people in Mangalore and one has also suspected the possiblity of police involvement.

Hence to be clear the image an independent body like CBI could have be deputed to investigate. After all the tax payers employ this machinery and they are supposed to serve the public. Here no one is doing anybody a facvour.

Covering the faces of culprits(if they truely are) is what I am against. Also PR exercises by announcing to media the measure are not warrranted here. Action on the ground is what people want. Its better to have a PR once a attack is prevented.

I had an occasion to make my observations earlier. I had stated categorically that the local Police Officers should be given a chance to investigate into the case and then only we had a right to make our comments. However some of us Mangaloreans have been rather hasty in our adverse observations. The two IPS officers are persons of integrity and from all accounts have a good history behind them. They have now proved their caliber and it is matter of time before all the persons involved are brought to book. Kudos to you Mr. Gopal Hasur and Dr. A.S. Rao who have brought honour to the department. You have indeed protected the rights of the people of Mangalore. May your tenures here be long and fruitful. Joe Gonsalves

My humble Advice to the Police in Mangalore, who are supposedly well trained, If you are holding a meeting of the PCO, Cyber cafe''s etc to make them informers, do not announce it in the media.....You are acting as the intelligence for the criminals who you expect to catch. Besides this measure should have been in place long before not after the incident.

It is prudent to make the youth the friends of the police....like many years back the then SP(i forgot his name) had a meeting with all college union leaders and asked them to first come to him with their problems and assured that he personally would sove them and not to go on strikes. All student strikes came to a halt in Mangalore and was well appreciated by all. Since communalism is a threat it would be wise for police to be friend the religious youth bodies for intelligence and problem solving.

Why only hide the face of the so called suspects, Hide the weapons too, also hide the police officials faces too.....The police have really taken the public to be fools. Normally faces are hidden if there is witness to the crime so as not to influence while they are paraded. Now I am sure there is a cover up. How come Ravi Poojary who claims(acc to police) to have carried out the crime is not yet arrested and his friends have. Who said IPS officials are of high standards.Any constable can do this rounding up of know sheeters.

When the police display these so called criminals or terrorists with a hood on. I always wonder if these young men are the real criminals and terrorists. Or are these unemployed young men being used as scapegoats. Mangalore Police department is notorious for covering up their actions. If police department has nothing to hide they should take off the hood, so the public can see their face. Police department did not cover Malabari’s face because they had caught a real criminal and wanted to show him off to the public.

We need to really appreciate the job of Mangalore police. Now they should ensure that they will corroborate the evidence so that these accused are proved guilty of the crimes. Most of the time police are failing to provide enough evidence in the court and the culprits go scot-free either due to negligence of or because of interference of politicians and interested parties. Hope this case won’t get the similar fate and justice is done to the victim and community of legal professionals.

Hosur ji, complete your investigation before giving any statement to the press. There should be equal opportunities for the "hooded men" to speak to the press also. There are lots of gaps in the sequence of events narrated by you. In the first instance itself you have ruled out the role of the four police officers and training your guns on a "self confessed bakra". People want answers.
