Mangaluru: Police chief warns against betting during cricket world cup

Mangaluru May 30: As ICC Cricket World Cup begins on May 30, city police commissioner Sandeep Patil has warned against betting and promised that police will curb the same.

Cricket betting has been on the rise in Mangaluru since past some years. Police commissioner Sandeep Patil started taking action against the betting as soon as he took charge.

During the last concluded IPL, as many as 18 cases on betting were booked resulting in arrests of 40 people. As World Cup will go on from today till July 14, now police commissioner has warned through twitter against betting.

The commissioner says in his twitter that while the batsmen will play their on and off drives, Mangaluru police will continue drive against cricket betting.

    Good intiative sir, your warning to betters or bookies is useless. Police officers knowing about many betters, still do not catch them, infact help them to carry out as they are heavily bribed.. many officers having tips do not proceed to go for further investigation.. people have lost faith in you coz small betters you are able to catch... But bookies are smarter enough to fool you.. warn your officers first to be honest to their service. People are finding difficulty to know and understand which officer can be approached if they have a tip. Many police are not trust worthy... Please suggest methods and means by how public can pass on tips to an honest officer who is able to take necessary action for the benefit of the society.

    Police commissioner is doing a great job...
    I would suggest that he Approach all colleges to induce the Students to assist the Police in various social commitments of the city. as Community service.. like maintain the traffic..
    2/Environment protection...
    3/health inspectors... Supervising , inspecting the Markets... Hospitals... Restaurants..
    4/Help Like Tourism police....
    5/Keep your city clean. program...
    6/None of the Youth seen loitering and wasting precious time .
    maintain Cleanliness and law and order.

    A GOOD INITIATIVE on the part of The Commissioner of Police. He is indeed working for The City of Mangalore and the people of Mangalore. Cricket is a game of skill and not an item for gambling.

    I join several other people in saying kudos to Mr. Sandeep Patil on his initiative.

    how is betting cheating. if you win you get paid as per the odds. if you loose, you loose.
    IF betting is allowed in horse racing, why not cricket?

    how is there a criminal conspiracy? The act is not criminal.

    Cricket as a game of skill requires hand -eye-coordination for throwing, catching and hitting. It requires speed, both during fielding chases and between the stumps. It requires stamina and brute strength to wallop boundaries. It requires microscopic levels of precision and mental alertness for batsmen to find gaps or for bowlers to produce variety of styles of deliveries’ (medium pace, fast, inswing, outswing, offspin, legspin, googly). The sport requires strategic masterminds that can select the most efficient fielding positions for piling pressure on the batsmen. Based on above description, cricket cannot be described anything, but as a game of skill. The game of cricket, therefore, cannot be held as a game of chance, but is a game of skill which is exempted under Section 12 of Public Gambling Act, from the definition of Gambling. Therefore, even if it is accepted that there was rampant betting going on in the IPL6, but it is an activity excluded u/s 12 of Public Gambling Act, and is not an offence for which any of the accused can be held liable…’

    If properly regulated, Govt can get GST on the winnings and also percentage of income under income tax.

    Under the english conditions England will most probably win the world cup because they have a long batting line up and Jos Buttler the wicket keeper can take the game away with his hard hitting batting.The final will be between England And India and they are favorites.
