CM Kumaraswamy meets Rahul Gandhi, tells him coalition govt functioning 'smoothly'

New Delhi, May 30 (Agencies): Amid speculations about the fate of the Congress-JD(S) coaltion government in Karnataka, chief minister H D Kumaraswamy on Thursday May 30 met Congress president Rahul Gandhi and

informed him that the state government was functioning smoothly and assured him that there was coordination between ruling coalition partners.

Kumaraswamy's meeting with the Congress president comes in the wake of growing dissent in the ruling coalition.

All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary in-charge of Karnataka K C Venugopal is in Bengaluru currently to placate the disgruntled state leaders.

"The CM apprised Rahul Gandhi of the current political situation in the state and said the coalition government in the state is functioning smoothly with cooperation and coordination between both the parties," an official statement said.

During the brief meeting, Kumaraswamy also urged Gandhi not to quit as the Congress chief, saying "the nation needs his service", the statement added.

Kumaraswamy met Rahul Gandhi at his residence here for over 20 minutes.

The Karnataka CM later told reporters, "I have requested Rahul Gandhi not to step down from his post."

Kumaraswamy also discussed the outcome of the just-concluded Lok Sabha polls in Karnataka with Gandhi.

The coalition government in the southern state has been fragile since its inception with reports of its collapse surfacing every now and then.

Following the drubbing of the Congress-JD(S) combine in the Lok Sabha election, where the two parties managed to win only one seat each in Karnataka, a senior Congress leader had claimed that the state government would collapse after June 10.

Two Congress MLAs – Ramesh Jarkiholi and Sudhakar -- met BJP leaders at Krishna's residence, though they later claimed that their visit was not political.

The BJP, with 105 legislators, is the single-largest party in the 225-member Karnataka Assembly, while the ruling coalition has 117 MLAs – 79 of the Congress, 37 of the JD(S) and one of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) – in the House.

In a democratic set up strong opposition is a must. It is very disturbing to note the present scenario where selfish politicians for the reason best known to them changing parties ,loyalty and are welcomed by other political outfit, plot to bring down the govt are encouraged does not seem to be good. The Govt and political parties in the interest of the nation should think seriously about this otherwise the very purpose of democracy will lose its value and democracy will not survive.

So what do you think ? Mr Kumaraswami & Siddhu is not corrupted ? I dont know what benifit you are getting from state government. Everything is being provided by central govt. these people just put their name in everywhere even if the yojan is from central. I stil remember these (JDS & Congress ) protesting against Fuel price hikes. But now we are getting it in lesser price but state doesnt want to drop the price ? Anyone questioned about it ? I am not from any party ( Reminder) But when one person is doing good , please try to appreciate it !MR Kumara openly said it that manglore people didnt vote him so why should he even help them ? is this the way a CM should be ?

Coalition runs smoothly if they keep away our former C.M. Recent Congress party's devastating defeat in the Lok Sabha made him more nervous than any body else in the Government. Let him be like that to reduce B.P. of our C.M.

Looks like rahul is happy with jds for reducing congress to 1 seat. This guy never learns from his mistakes. He aligned with tdp in telangana and party was wiped out in assembly elections which should have been a tough fight otherwise. if the alliance continues for some more time, karnataka congress situation will be like in andhra and telangana.

For not securing opposistion position for straight 2nd term???

    2014 it was 44
    In 2019 it is 52
In 2024 it will be 60

Like this they need minimum 140 year to reach 272 bench mark to come back to power
And in 2159 rahul will become PM at age of 190

Offcourse till 2159 you will vote to congress
And congress will celebrate 275th anniversary by that time

    Congratulation in advance buddy

Congress made a big mistake in Karnataka by forming coalition government with JDS. They should have allowed BJP to form
the government with JDS, And they should have contested this loksabha election separately in all 28 seats.
Even Sumalatha could have been a Congress candidate if they had no agreement with JDS.
