Udupi: Wearing helmet compulsory for pillion riders - SP Nisha James

Udupi, Jun 2: Superintendent of police (SP) of the district Nisha James said that it is mandatory for the pillion riders in two-wheeler to wear helmet as per rule 129 of Central Motor Vehicle Act of 1989. If this rule is not followed, suitable action will be taken against erring people.

In addition, excepting two and three-wheelers, wearing seat belt is compulsory for all light motor vehicle drivers and passenger who sits in the front seat along with the driver.

Labourers and passengers should not be transported in goods vehicles under any circumstances. More than stipulated number of students should not be transported in school vans, auto rickshaw and private vehicles. The license of the erring driver will be suspended for three months or more as per the order of the Supreme Court. The parents also should not send their children to school in vehicles that carry more than the stipulated number of passengers said a publication sent by SP.

    It’s very welcoming and just to implement these kind of discipline in Karnataka/ India as public safety but do we have manpower to control the public? And is this applicable to all citizens or only for common man ?

    but, when will you tell bus operators to install doors and close them when they are moving?
    also when will you check the bus operators when they are taking passengers standing (standing passengers turn into projectiles in an event of an accident)

    Police bring such helmet rules simply because they can make money out of it.

    If police are so concerned they will not be putting up barriers haphazardly or could have put speed breakers without clear markings.

    What about Rikshawalas who dont use indicators and rash riding...Bus drivers are far better than these peoples...they hav attitude of owning Benz.

    What about drunk driving? Why only cops catching at Indrali on weekend nights? Why no cops catching drunk drivers in other areas of udupi also?
    Also I see so many drivers of vehicles speaking on mobile on one hand and driving with other and some smartass 2 wheeler riders whatsapping and riding scooty...

    The commen saying not possible or impossible I think could be done away. I have seen in Mumbai streets two wheeler riders riding on footpaths zooming from the wrong side even though traffic cops are posted. The main thing is lack of fear. If traffic rules are followed strictly then erring motorists themselves obey the rules.Department should be honest and strict.

    The lady singam of Udupi police, she will do a great service and set things right in Udupi.
    Lot of things need to be undone, we do not have much regard for road rules and etiquette. If we travel overseas I see our Indians drivers driving well and sticking to lanes, only in India we become careless.


    I am sure this tough IPS lady will make Udupi better in terms traffic governance

    My big salute to Superintendent of Police (SP) Nisha James. I hope these rules will be strictly followed by all riders, pillion riders, drivers, and co-passengers sitting next to the driver. This for the safety of all. These rules should have been implemented long back but it is never too late.

    Is this rule only for announcement sake or followed strictly? Police never questions the inmates of posh cars like BMW, Merc etc.

    That is because owners of posh cars like BMW and MERC know and follow all traffic rules. . The biggest rule breakers are the auto-rickshaw drivers and the two wheelers. This year alone two ladies were killed by auto-rickshaws on Udupi-Manipal road.
