Vasco, Apr 30: A total of 50 passengers flying home from Dubai, who landed at the Dabolim airport at about 1.15 am on Thursday April 30 were in for surprise as doctors on special duty at the airport asked for their throat swabs. The doctors pressed to duty by the government to screen for swine flue, asked the passengers whether they had any symptoms of swine flue. But what was more baffling that most of them were not even aware of the disease. Nevertheless they rebuffed the question and ascertained that they did not have any symptoms of swine flue. Hence no throat swabs were taken.

The passengers, mostly Goans working in Dubai, who traveled home on IC 594, Indian Airlines International flight on Thursday night were eager to meet their family members who were waiting eagerly outside the airport. But the team of doctors held them back for health check up. As the doctors started asking them questions regarding their health, most of them hastened to complete formalities in a bid to meet their near and dear ones.

Epidemiologist Dr Dyson and microbiologist Dr Parvez Akhtar, under the supervision of Dr Narsimha Bhat, MD, Post Health Officer, Marmagoa, inquired with passengers whether they had toured the swine flue-affected countries like Mexico, US, New Zealand, France, Canada and UK. Only one passenger was found touring Canada. Though the doctors on duty took his information, they later said he had no symptoms of swine flue. However, doctors refused to reveal his identity.

When doctors were asked as to why they were not taking the throat swabs of passengers, they said that those having symptoms of swine flue like fever, lethargy and lack of appetite, running nose, coughing, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea were supposed undgergo thorough screening. Since no one was reported with any of these symptoms, throad swabs were not taken.

Replying to one question Dr Dyson informed that passenger cannot lie, as certain symptoms can easily be  traced on patient's face.

According to him if any one is found with symptoms, they will take the throat swab and will send it to laboratory. If he/she is found to be infected, then the patient will be told to take precautions and he will also be isolated from the rest, so that the disease does not spread.

Although most of the local, national and international media has given the much space to news of swine flue, some of the passengers were not aware of the same and were seen asking media persons about the disease.

One of the foreign couples, while speaking to this correspondent said that there are no swine flue cases in Dubai and they have knowledge of the said disease.

It was also surprising to note that only the doctors on special duty were seen wearing mask while no other staff of airport was taking precaution, raising doubts in people's mind as how far the government is concerned about the matter.

Border controls failed to control SARS and the evidence is that it will not help to control swine flu. So India is wasting its time and energy on Airport screening .There can be hundreds of people entering the country carrying the virus but not displaying the symptoms! I have enclosed a communication from WHO in this regard. Authorities around the world tried to contain the spread of the virus, screening air passengers from affected areas and advising against non-essential travel to Mexico. But the WHO said border screenings "don''t work," while the EU''s health commissioner said there was no need for travel restrictions. "Border controls do not work. Screening doesn''t work," Hartl said.

This type of checking should be done in all airports in India if they are really worried about swine flu.

Its better to be safe than sorry. Goa is a tourist destination and its mandatory for such checks in the light of tourists coming from round the world. But my concern is "What about those tourists entering Goa by Bus, Cars and other vehicles, don''t they require a check up too ?"

The whole screening process is not evidence based. WHO has repeatedly informed that the screening process does not work. I wonder why time and money is wasted on something that is not scientific or evidence based. Looks like India has not learnt its lessons after SARS.Screening, banning travel etc are things that sadly do not stop a pandemic.

"Janarannu Mechhisalu JanardanaNindalu Sadhyavilla" (Even God will not be able to satisfy people) If you act, they will say authorities are over reacting. If you do not act, they will say authorities did not do anything!

Its good to know that Indian authorities are taking steps to check the flu, ofcourse we must do that coz we have over a billion population in such a case, prevention is better than cure, ,having said that please be professional in approach, why are not the airport staff wearing the mask? they must be the firSt persont to take precautions since they are inline of duty and direct contact to the potential patients???

I want to correct Ms/Mr Jude, in middle east or any europe the population is less and the country is well equiped to fight the flu,but for us in India because of vast geography and equally large population it is better to be cautious, and i support you thaought that all the airport entry should be monitored not one.

Since only a couple of international flights land at Goa, the officials there must be having a lot of free time at their disposal. Therefore this silly exercise. How else can one explain such ignorance. The swine flu is around in the US, Mexico and some parts of Europe.

Flights arriving in Mumbai, Delhi from those destinations are not monitored, but our Goan officials are trying to jump the gun here. Can somebody tell them that no case of swine flu has been detected around the Middle East as yet. If precaution has to be taken then it should be uniform and practiced at all airports around the country.
