Bengaluru: Renaming of Congress Kadlekai as Modi Masala is just a rumour

Bengaluru, Jun 8: Popular Bengaluru snack ‘Congress Kadlekai’ has fallen prey to a rumour. It is the shop named ‘Sreenivasa Brahmins Bakery’ located on DVG Road in Gandhi Bazaar, Basavanagudi that makes this snack. The store is well known for its tasteful assortment of snacks, but most popular of them is ‘Congress Kadlekai’. The shop has drawn people in for ages now. The news doing rounds that ‘Congress Kadlekai’ will see a name change due to the popularity of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and would be named after him as ‘Modi Masala’ has turned out to be just a rumour.

The popularity of the snack dates back to the year 1956. Considered to be one of the most famous bakeries in Bengaluru, Sreenivasa Brahmins Bakery had launched a spicy snack by the name of 'Congress Kadlekai'. The owner of the bakery, Vatsalaa Ramaprasad Iyengar recalls the invention of the snack 'Congress Kadlekai’

Back in 1956, Vatsalaa’s father-in-law, Ramaswamy Iyengar created this special snack as result of shortage of ingredients. The scarcity of Maida triggered the use of edible rationed peanuts in the making of the snack.

Later in the years to come the snack was perfected by Ramaprasad Iyenger, husband of Vatsalaa. She credits him for enhancing the flavor through intensive research of various ingredients. This resulted in the creation of a high quality product.

In the recent times a rumour came in about the renaming of this age old snack from 'Congress Kadlekai' to 'Modi Masala'.

Upon hearing this news, the owner of the bakery discarded it. She stressed that she would never rename the snack and will always maintain its originality.

Further, she also admitted that customers and reporters have asked for the change of the name. The request had come in after the recent victory Modi gained in the Lok Sabha election.

The renaming of the snack has since been tossed aside as a rumour and nothing more than that.
