Puttur, May 6: Neha Rai, a resident of Nellikatte, near here, bagged 84.8 percent in the recently held SSLC examinations, like many others. However, what sets her apart from her counterparts is the fact that she is a polio-stricken teenager who has proved to the world that confidence plays a vital role and disability cannot be a hindrance to excellence.
Physically challenged Neha is fully dependent on her parents Balakrishna and Nayana V Rai. She is a student of Dr Shivaram Karant Government High School, Nellikatte, and has brought honour to her parents, teachers, school, and the entire town, by bagging 530 marks in the exam.
She missed getting a distinction by only a few marks, but whatever she has achieved is through her own efforts as she has not attended any tuition classes.
Neha scored 120 in Kannada, 80 in English, 94 in Hindi, 78 in Mathematics, 74 in Science, and 84 in Social Studies. Although she got fewer than expected marks in science, she has no regrets as she got more in Kannada.
Neha is computer savvy and has also bagged several prizes in fine arts and composition.
She acknowledges the support extended by her parents, teachers, and classmates and aspires to take up economics in PUC and secure a job in banking later on.
Her parents are forever supportive of their daughter and are wholly dedicated to her care. They are proud of Neha’s achievement and also thank her teachers and colleagues.
School headmaster Gururaj is also happy about Neha’s achievement. “She has been loving and friendly to all teachers and students at the school. Despite her disability, she was always cheerful and her achievement is indeed an honour to the school,” he said.
Neha has proven to the world that the physically-challenged only need the opportunity to excel and not sympathy. This young girl’s achievement should prove an inspiration to others.
She is certainly someone who deserves the support of the government, philanthropists, as well as social welfare and voluntary organizations.
