Beltangady, May 18:
At least five persons were killed on the spot in a road accident when a KSRTC-run Iravat bus rammed into a stranded timber-laden lorry at Udane near here in the wee hours of Monday May 18.

So far the deceased have not been identified. Sources said that five more passengers suffered critical injuries in the accident. They have been admitted to A J Hospital in Mangalore. The accident has also left as many as 10 passengers with minor injuries. They have been admitted to hospitals in the town as well as in Puttur.

The bus which was on its way to Mangalore from Bangalore, hit the stationary lorry at Udane at a high speed. The timber-laden lorry which had been stranded along the roadside was spotted at the last minute by the speeding bus driver. His last ditch efforts to avert the mishap were not successful as bus hit the lorry. As of now it is not known whether the driver of the bus too is among the deceased.

Eyewitnesses also said that the lorry had been parked by the roadside without switching on the parking lights. Since it had rained in the night, it became still more difficult for the bus driver to apply breaks on time.

Puttur ASP Harsha Gupta visited the spot and investigation is on.

These kind of accidents always happen on our indian highways..some idiot will have parked their truck without lights and an equally unsuspecting driver will ram in from behind. Its not only the drivers involved who are to be blamed. Its the governing body as well. Why the **** did this truck break down ...because it wasnt maintained properly. In some countries, the vehicle owner has to pay a heavy fine if the vehicle breaks down on the road...But in our great country..the drivers do pay fine ...but all of that is without receipts. And...look at the way this truck was loaded with logs protuding out of its body... And...look at the way one of the passengers has described that the driver could have been a non-B7R trained driver...KSRTC is to be blamed here .. We risk our lives by not complaining about rash drivers...thats why they dont care.. How many of us have ever reprimanded a rash bus driver. If we remain awake ...we can see the way these volvo drivers terrorise other drivers . I had been regularly driving on the superb NH48 ..almost every weekend from bangalore-mangalore The way these volvos overtake would make even Micheal Schumacer proud. I have been in situtations where i have called up the ksrtc office and complained ...i have taken videos as proof...and then confronted the driver Its really sad that innocent people have to lose their lives.

N.Ranganath, Bangalore. My brother Dr.Yedukumar was in the ill fated bus Thank God luckily he survived by an inch and death has just kissed him.It is surprising that Transport minister had stated to press that Volvo bus dirvers are specially trained, but the truth is this particular driver is just a trainee and wears Kaki dress instead of regular uniform.

It clearly shows negligence is rampant in KSRTC and this needs to be throughly investigated and culprit officials should be brought to justice. My heart goes to the departed souls and pray almighty to give enough strength to bear this shock.

It is a very sad news, and the tragedy could have been very easily averted, had there any simple warning system. Plastic reflectors, and red blinking lights could have warned the traffic about the stalled truck. Government has to introduce strict laws to have warning system, so that precious lives and property can be saved.

By seeing the photos I  felt very sad. I do agree with Dr Kiran Acharya, Udupi. It’s true that we are having 21st century and our roads are like in 18th century. Efforts should be made to have more safe roads with all types of safety measures and sign boards visible on the sides of roads. Heavy Vehicles should not be allowed to park on the road sides without any issues or facts, and if needed they have to park by switching on the parking lights and indicators.

If we refer to other countries, road safety rules and regulations are strictly followed and the same should be implemented in our country too. Bus drivers should not be given stress or target of reaching their destinations in a hurry, as our roads are not so safe to drive fast irrespective of the climatic conditions and geographical features. It is the responsibility of each driver and organisations of transportation system to take care of life of each and every person on board, on road and on street too.

Proper training, guidance, safety advices, road track systems, risk assessment and risk mitigation should be given of more importance. It is already late, too late. Hope the situations will be better in future, at least from now.

You need to be very stable to see the deceased bodies. It's so horrible.. In india, we take things for granted, losing life. It is indeed a tragic accident, with a uniqueness of its own. In addition to all that has been said by many readers of this daijiworld, i like to add here the following point. One very important thing that every driver should remember is that this time of the year, when we get some first rain-showers on the road, many times unanticipated, the driver has to be extremely careful, because irrespective of the training and irrespective of the traffic conditions on road, the wet and slippery road condition itself can cause tragic accidents. It has been the situation every year, year after year, during the second half of May and the first half of June. I pray that every driver gets alerted to this fact and acts cautiously. (btw, if the prior/approaching stretch of road just before the location of that parked truck, is in fact a straight stretch of road for a reasonable distance, then it is certainly the fault of the bus driver - he could have done better to avoid the accident but if that stretch of road is curvy and the parked truck could not have been visible for an approaching driver from a reasonable breaking distance, then the fault is squarely on the truck driver and the bus driver cannot be blamed as such. KSRTC RTO TrafficPolice can do some detailed analysis to ensure avoidance of avoidable accidents and minimizing the chances of unavoidable accidents)

To drive a "volvo" bus, driver has to take some extra care b''coz the engine and airconditioner is fitted at the rear side of the bus. Since it is on the rear side, driver won''t hear a single noise from the engine i mean speed unless he watch the speedometer. I am sure this driver, drive this bus with negligence and on high speed. He is responsible for the lives of these innocents.

We have to blame the RTA Police for taking bribes and allowing Jungle Raj to happen on roads and when inocent lifes are lost then we feel sorry thats all. So my dear country Men & Women join hands and make the Police more accountable and train them, we can fight with each other in the name of religion , why cant we fight for us and for chindrens safety may it be traffic rules , cleaness, basic needs too.

On hearing the news later in the morning when my relatives started calling my up inquiring if I reached Considering ourselves very lucky, I must also mention that our driver was in the usual white-colored dress indicating he was a Volvo bus driver. In addition, his driving throughout the night was very good, maintaining a consistent speed, using breaks very timely. If the unfortunate driver involved in this accident wasnt an trained Volvo driver, then KSRTC should take responsibility for this.

Dr N Yadukumar, NRCC, Puttur, Really sad to hear about the incident that took place in your life of the bus in which you were travelling. Its true almost similar incident has also happened in my life. I was travelling in the KSRTC Rajahamsa bus from Bangalore to Mangalore at night, Bus headlights went off at night. So we got another KSRTC bus in exchange for travelling to bangalore, After a distance of 10 KM bus tyre got punctured .All the people was getting angry on the bus driver as KSRTC could not get the Good bus for us. I got angry and started shouting at the bus driver. For 5 min, Driver Did not said anything after that he said It really nice that bus tyre got punctured. We were surprise to hear this. I asked him the reason. He said bus brakes are already in bad condition and chances are that bus could have meet an accident if we have travelled further. We were really surprised to know that how KSRTC can play with our life like this. As you said "Driver was ordinary bus driver not an volvo driver". So it is sure that KSRTC is just bother about the money not people life. Friends Wake up before its too late.

Volvo busses are known to be fast and moslty in control when applied immediate brakes. But in this case its not technical or mechanical failure, its 100% human error, on both sides The drivers inability to spot the parked truck, and the Truck driver who parked loaded truck without parking lights or reflectors as seen in pics. we always hear these incidents, only way out is to educate motorist about road manners.

I was the fortunate survivor of the most horrible accident that took place on 18-5-2009. I woke up on hearing rattling sound shaking entire bus. For the moment I thought bus would be falling to a ditch. Bus it did not happen , bus halted on the level area with big rattling sound. Many glass pieces fell on my head as well as on my body. I was totally shocked. Seconds later the bus roof was falling on the left side. I was dumb struck soon I heard crying passengers helplessly.

I looked to see my co passenger. He was missing. Then I looked back I saw one person sitting on the back row was run over by thick wooden log. I could also see the wooden log protruding after piercing through wndow to about 10 feet length carrying a passenger along with that. It looked as if in the process the passenger was already dead. I managed to come out of my seat after ensuring that nothing had happened to me. I could see only thighs and abdomen of the passenger below the wooden log on the rear seat. I wanted to pull him out and started shouting at him if he responds any. All my efforts went in vain. He was already dead. I started walking towards exit door and I was aghast to see three passengers sitting on the left side of the bus in the sitting position with their head and face completely disfigured. They died on the spot.

I saw another passenger dead out side on the road also. Wounded passengers some how managed to come out of the bus. But no body was able to help each other because they have not come out of the shock. When I saw driver’s seat it was intact with out any disturbance. Later I thought that driver would have tried to escape the accident by turning the front wheel extreme right. Later local people helped informing police station and for ambulance which came immediately. All the necessary things have been attended with out any delay. After catching another night service bus I managed to reach puttur safely. At Puttur I could see the news coming in flashes that 5 people have died including driver. I discussed with another surviving passenger like me and I could get astonishing information that. the driver was wearing khaki dress and he looked like ordinary bus driver and not Volvo bus driver. Because Volvo bus driver should have worn white dress. I was also told that driver was not well versed with Volvo bus driving. as he used to get instruction from another person sitting on the left side corner of the bus. If that being so is it due to negligence of the driver and KSRTC.

While starting from the Bangalore Bus station it started late around 11 o clock night. This has costed more than 5 precious lives. Will in future people dare to travel in Volvo bus managed by KSRTC ?

India is one country whose Government does not value human life, maybe because of the fact that we have too many people, because they are the one’s who are in the safest line of fire, since they take the safest transport, have got body guards to act as human shields and are ready to die to save the silly politician. I have been travelling this road every weekend for the past 6 years and if you open the police records, you will not be surprised to find that this route has atleast one accident every week. I never get to sleep in the bus, and I ensure I say extra prayers when I board the bus. When will the authorities open their eyes?? That’s a big question, if at all they open their eyes. Our politicians are all empty drums making a lot of noise but no results. Except for making money, these people have no moral, conscience and most of all they don’t have any other goals in life. They are not ashamed to flaunt their big fat ugly bellies. The only solution is a people’s movement. Can we???

It is about time the NH (Central Govt.) Dept and the RTO (State Govt)get their act together. This is the most neglected of the NHs in Karnataka and the most dangerous one with ups and downs and sharp curves. Most of the Mangalore bound buses reach this place in the early hours. Possible that the bus driver was tired. However, KSRTC Iravatha drivers are specially trained and well beheaved ones. I to some extent blame the truck drivers. As you can see in the picture, the logs were protruding out from the truck and no danger signal! Also most of these truck drivers are careless and less educated. They do not anticipate such happenings in case of breakdown.

If the blinkers were unserviceable, the driver should have put on some fire torches by burning waster rubbers (generally they carry piece of tube or tires)which burn for longer duration. Most importantly in this particular sector the relief comes very late. Despite several such tragidies, what steps the authorities have taken. Atleast a highway police patrol or outpost with wireless communication facility, an ambulance, relief cranes etc. Everything has to come from a nearby big town. I also feel the local dwellers address this issue strongly with their leaders. Today it is unknown traveller, tomorrow may be ours. Afterall human blood has one universal colour. We can only pray for the bereaved families.

It was on 17th Dec.2000 I was driving a five door commander to Allahabad with 8 people aboard. Due to heavy fog in winter the speed of the vehicle might have been 15 - 20 kms per hour. Suddenly there was a big bang. All of us in the vehicle were unconscious after a heavily loaded truck dashed against the jeep. when I opened my eyes after a couple of minutes I realised that two sisters had died and others badly injured. I survived with 14 operations in a span of two and a half years. Nine years have passed the scar of sisters'' death and others'' injury is still fresh in my mind. The passengers place their complete trust in the driver. He is like a God for them. While driving we need to realise that a driver is like the father who tells his child to jump in the dark with a promise to hold him in his arms. What has happened is very sad. Every driver need to ask this question to the self " Do I drive passengers to their abyss ?

Tragic accident where the Bus driver , the lorry driver and the traffic police are culprits here. how can a lorry be allowed to transport goods with logs sticking out. all 3 are equally culpable. Innocents have died. our roads and our road sense have a lot to improve.

I have been travelling from BLR to MLR via Shiradi as well as Madikeri normally on front row seat. For this particular accident I do not blame driver. It is purely because scant respect given to Break Lights, Not having Red reflector wooden logs behind lorries etc. etc. Essentially, this would have happened any day, the way lorries parked on both sides. Further most of the Volovo drivers maneuver vehicle at the last minute. When I spoke to some drivers, they say that are over strectched. Their duty simply exceeds 10 hours per day. If commissioners is looking at these feedbacks and implement some strict rules on roads with Ghat Patroling vehicles and two drivers for long routes good. Else we can expect another incident of this kind

Overtaking & Parking of vehicles on the curved roads are very dangerous and commonly practiced by our drivers with least botheration of the tragic sequences. It is the duty of the RTO to put a prominent sign board at every curve roads as no Stopping/Parking Area and provide Parking Bays at regular intervals especially on Highways & Ghat Section.

Instead of this the RTO is putting up 30 kms Speed Limit sign Boards between Jyothi-Hampanakatta gaps on KMC Mercara Trunk Road. Later the RTO are busy catching innocent drivers/riders for over speeding with the Rader/Camera etc. which is unethical.

Dear Mr. D C I always observe there is parking of transprot vehicles on NH 48. as you are proven you are a strict follower of rules what your rules says in this case of parking on roads, this problem is everywhere. Most of the places are mulki- padubidri. nelyadi - udane. thalapadi. and so on

Drivers in India never use hazard lights, indicators, side mirrors etc. while driving. Some cars you will never find side mirrors because they become an obstacle while driving in traffic. This incident was bound to happen. Hope the wounded passengers recover soon.

My god this is horrible death to those who died. we can make out from the look of the bus how bad the accident was, again the truck drivers has proven how irresponsible they are what I suggest is truck which carries such  big timber-laden are also must have long in size. The checkpoints should stop this kind of trucks but what to do they take money and lead to these kind of ill fated accidents

I think a basic education is necessary before issuing a Driving License one driver must have wrongly parked the vehicle and other must be over speeding.Due to these people''s ignorance and carelesness innocent people had to die.
