Why Congress couldn’t Stop Lotus Bloom in Coastal Belt

Why Congress couldn’t Stop Lotus Bloom in Coastal Belt

by Ronald Anil Fernandes for Deccan Herald

Mangalore, May 19: Though analysts as well as party workers were not very sure of the outcome in Udupi-Chikmagalur, it was not the case in Dakshina Kannada. Forget the Congress, even the Bharatiya Janata Party leaders too were sceptical about greenhorn and political novice Nalin Kumar’s victory (though Nalin himself predicted that he would win with a margin of over 35,000 votes).

A look at the Assembly constituency-wise polls proved that a majority of the people have preferred Hindutva.
Except in Mangalore City South and Mangalore, where Congress candidate B Janardhan Poojary secured more votes than BJP (65,042 and 58,508 votes respectively), Nalin Kumar Kateel has secured more votes in the remaining six assembly constituencies.

In fact, Nalin secured 73,623 votes in Sullia, 67,070 in Puttur and 66,176 in Belthangady (21,924 votes, 13,443 votes and 11,225 votes more than Poojary respectively).

Bhat flops

Meanwhile, BJP-rebel candidate and BJP State President D V Sadananda Gowda’s guru Ram Bhat Urimajalu failed to make even little impact. Though Bhat managed to get over 25,000 votes for Shakunthala Shetty in the assembly elections in Puttur, he could secure only 2,649 votes in his home town!

His overall tally was 5,960. As claimed by Nalin himself, person is not important in BJP, but the ideology and party matters.
Ironically, BSP candidate Girish Rai and Independent candidate Subramanyamata Kuntikana managed to poll 10,196 and 8,932 votes respectively, much more than Bhat! Incidentally, a majority of people in the district still may not know who Rai and Kuntikana are!

The fate of CPM candidate and veteran politician B Madhava too is no different than that of Bhat. He could poll only 18,328 votes, much less than what was expected.

Interestingly, independents and BSP candidates’ votes alone total upto 33,284. It is true that no one expected Poojary’s defeat, that too with a whopping margin of 40,420 votes.

No doubt, the party will do the post mortem, but it will be of little use. As claimed by Poojary himself, “the over confidence in workers and leaders broke up the calculations in the elections.”

Voters opt for Hindutva

On the other hand, Nalin stated that the voters have opted for ‘Hindutva,’ as he had sought votes on the basis of Hindutva. “I will live upto the expectations of the public as 49.16% of the public have exercised their franchise for me,” Nalin, the RSS man claimed.

Though it was believed that the church attack as well as the pub attack would affect the BJP, the mandate has shown otherwise.
Going by Nalin’s claims, Amarnath Shetty (JD-S) leader in Moodbidre) and Gangadhar Gowda’s (Cong-rebel leader in Belthangady) support helped him gain a huge number of votes in respective assembly segments. Interestingly, those votes were not BJP, but anti-Congress!

No doubt, party workers (RSS workers) have played a significant role in garnering the votes and Nalin has attributed his success to them.

In Udupi too, except Kaup, Sringeri and Moodigere, where Congress candidate Jayapra kash Hegde has polled slightly more votes than his opponent D V Sadananda Gowda, the State BJP President got a huge lead in Kundapur, Udupi, Chikmagalur and Tarikere (11,663, 5,225, 4,415 and 6,312 votes more than Hegde) respectively.

Do or die

Poojary has alleged that flow of money and liquor secured BJP’s victory. But what matters is the numbers. The Congress has failed to break 18-year-old BJP rule in Dakshina Kannada district.

And perhaps, it will be not possible for the Congress to recover amidst a number of Lotus which they have been capturing over the last decade, be it MLAs, Mangalore City Corporation or even Zilla Panchayat.

Congress very well knew that it will be ‘do or die’ this time. Fortunately or unfortunately, the Congress could not make it and perhaps it may take decades to regain the Congress glory in the coastal region, where once they ruled the roost.

Highlights

  • Despite losing the polls, Congress candidate B Janardhan Poojary polled 4,58,965 votes
  • DK registered highest polling percentage in its history (74.44%)
  • Ram Bhat, who managed to get over 25,000 votes in Puttur assembly constituency alone for Shakunthala Shetty in the last Assembly elections, managed to secure only 2,649 votes in Puttur. His overall tally was 5,960, much less than BSP and an Independent
  • BJP registered its 6th consecutive victory in DK
  • Poojary secured more votes in Mangalore South, which is represented by a BJP MLA; Nalin Kumar secured more votes in Belthangady, Moodbidre and Bantwal, where Congress MLAs are in power!
  •  Though political analysts had pinned high hopes on Third Front, both B Madhava (DK) and Radha Sundaresh (Udupi-Chikmagalur) failed to make an impact. They polled 18,328 and 24,991 respectively and both lost their deposits

Good article laced with mixed comments, however Mr. Vivek Bhat has sensibly won my appreciation. Let us live peacefully as our parents and grand parents lived in this beautiful place called MANGALORE.

Shun party politics after election. That will be more healthy. To add on Ronald''s election analysis BJP could get in MLR South 47% against Congress''s 50%,in MLR BJP could get 40% against Congress''s 54% and in MLR North BJP could get 48% against Congresa''s 47%.Overall in MLR BJP could get 45% against Congress''s 50%. Throughout the D.K.

Others have polled 5% of the totall polled vote, amounting 57,572. These we can consider as anti Congress as well as anti BJP votes.

Mr M. Bhat, you logic applies fully well in Karnataka where the BJP government along with the CM''s secretary have rigged the elections, because had the poll been fair and free the congress would have won at least 20 seats. A self professed sagacious and intelligent person as you who advices everyone who disagrees with your silly comments to grow up, should first grow up yourself. Your foolish comments no longer interest the readers. Please accept and admit that a communal outfit has been rejected by the great people of India.

Please reform yourself and come out of this minority phobia. India belongs to all Indians, and it is divisive people like you who are misfits and do not deserve to be citizens of this great country. When the congress leaders were fighting for our independence and so many of them gave up their lives your RSS leaders were nowhere around but hobnobbing with the british, incase you have forgotten history.

M.Bhat, In all your wisdom what you are essentially saying is India is a failed state, where our democratic institutions and agencies can be manipulated by political parties to do their bidding. I hope you understand the gravity of your accusation or I have to conclude you are just naive to buy into these conspiracy theories.

The Supreme Court has cleared the EVMs as tamper proof, our EVM are used by UN to conduct elections in other countries. I am sure if there was any shred of truth in your accusation we would have known. The video you posted is about some American trying to prove how US made EVM’s have problem not the ones made in India by ECIL.

It is an unfortunate day when the congress won which is the most corrupt party ever since independence. In a state like Andhra and Tamil Nadu where the congress and allies have swept and won despite anti incumbency is because of careful poll rigging of EVM"S or voting machines by the secret service RAW. The congress has done it on a limited scale from states where friendly parties were in power. The getting 21 seats by congress in uttar pradesh where it had no organization till the election is too good to be a miracle. It has to be the tampering with EVM''s. Remember that Naveen Chawla and S.Y. Qureshi are congress appointed election commissioners and there had been a controversey regarding their appointment. To prove my point I will show you a video that it takes 10 seconds for a professional to hack into an EVM. watch this http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=7926958774822130737 If you remember Jayalalitha had also complained about the so called errors in electronic voting machines where the light blinked on the symbol of Karunanidhi''s party when a person pressed the button to vote for jayalalitha. Think for a while -why has the congress not faced anti incumbency in any states of its rule in Delhi, Andhra, Haryana, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra ? Is it not strange that all the congress ruled states are bucking the anti incumbency trend for the congress ?

Hi all, I just happened to see most of the comments on this page and was pretty disturbed seeing hindus and christians fight over this... i still remember Mangalore as a peace loving city.. where there were no fights between hindus and muslims also for that matter.. it is really shameful that even after so many fights between communities in our own backyard we haven''t still learnt our lessons.. we are leaving the dirty politicians play their games in the name of relegion and make each others fight.. So wake up Mangalore.. its my humble request as a mangalorean.. i love my Mangalore and i will not let it be divided by POLITICIANS.... I was proud of my city cos it had the best institutions built by christians & Hindus.. to name a few Aloysious, milagres, canara,Manipal institute, nitte, agnes etc.. it is just an example of how good mangaloreans are today in the outside world.. people are more confident that people in rest of the country.. even at work.. we were proud to be called a place from where intelligent and good looking people come from.. but today we are a communal riots sensitive area.. do you want your children to grow up in mlore with this impression or the impression i/we posting our comments here???.. so let's make managlore a place what it really deserves to be.. for a matter of fact India the place it deserves to be.. stop internal fights as we have got enough outside source to trouble the great country of ours... Jai Sri Ram.. Allah hu akbar.. Jesus the saviour :-)

If some miscreants create any problems, congress & other parties put the blame on BJP or Hindhutva and tell & go to the extent publising Hidhutva means Terrorism. Even the peace loving Hindhu''s like us get upset with such remarks when any community acuses our religion. How much Muslims worship Islam, or cristians worship Bible even we worship our beliefs, traditions and practices. No one has a right to oppose it. If one doesnt belive it ot doesnt like it, just Shut up. But Congress doesnt do that. If Illegal cattle trade is caught by Hindhus then Congress blames BJP is terrorising innocent minorites. This is just one of their party slogan i believe. If Minorites were victims of BJP or its policies there would have been no muslim living in Gujrath till now.

I know since BJP has come up noe evry TOM DICK & HARRY who wears saffron Lungi & Towel will act like a king in Mangalore. This is not a healty situation. But who has given rise to it its congress. Since they started playing Votebank politics even BJP started. BJP used it wisely & stood by hindhu''s and Congress had no choice then but maintain their vote bank. If Congress had a impartial view then any educated person would not have voted for BJP including me. In fact even with so much bias in society we wanted Poojary to win because personnely he had improved a lot over the time. Mr Pojari was very sensible in his talks this time than previously when he use to keep up only his community (billawas ) and comment tirades on others including Bunts, Brahmins & Jains. Am sure his public infamous personnel remarks against Dr Veerendra Hegde is well known and people have not forgotten it.

Politician like Poojari dint have to give certificate to a personality like Dr Hegde. But unfortuntely he lost this time also as I feel Even though Poojary has improved. I strongly feel when a person like Poojary couldnt put Congress back on track in DK no one in near future can. Poojary was the best candidate Congress had feilded from Karnataka but their own policies let him down.

Its very simple even small kids know it. Even though Mr Poojary was much deserving winning candidate in all the matter''s than Nalin Kumar he had to face the anti congress factor. Looking at the histroy of congress''s anti-hindhu attitude majority community has suddenly awakend. It was not the vote for Nalin kumar but all anti congress votes and pro BJP votes. Otherwise leaders like Rama Bhat also would have got atleast 25000 votes whihc dint happen. So the fact only says. Congress went to all the extent to appease minorites irrespective of wether the BJP was responsible for whatevr they are accusing off. They even challenged the era old beliefs of Ramayan.

Do you think hindhu''s will keep quite then. When we have people like these we do not need Pakisthan as our neighbours. In another 25 years India will become another pakisthan or afganisthan. Then the aging OBAMA if he is alive will say that India is eppicenter of terrorism. Its not BJP but congress who is responsible for creating communal hatres in costal region. They are responsible for the rise & all the chaos BD SRS is creating.

Had it not for them people where not aggressive like this before. The simple fact for this one can realise the mentality of people just by looking at these blogs or comments from almost a year.(i agree even I am one among them) Although by gods grace i or my family have not been affected till now due to this communal hatred or moral policing in Mangalore I do not feel Mangalore is a safe place of Family and peace loving people unless communal harmony is restored back.

The BJP may have won in the costal belt but the focus now is on the Cong-I and the new cabinet! The list of wining Cong-I MPs is like the worst ‘rogues gallery’ from Karnataka. Obviously grabbing ministerial berths in the Union Cabinet demands the highest levels of corruption and crookedness. Karge has always been capitalizing on his ‘dalit’ brand and made millions during his stints in the state cabinet while his college going son is famous for highhandedness and womanizing. Mr. Dharam Singh too has made millions before he was the CM of the state and his family business in Bidar ensured his victory in the elections. Sadly while the Karge-Singh duo have been looting the state for years and will now open new Swiss bank accounts, the Hyderabad-Karnataka region continues to be the most undeveloped region! The less said about H. Vishwanath and K.H. Muniyappa the better. Anyone in Mysore and Kolar will explain the totally selfish motives of these ‘dedicated and loyal’ party workers. There were so many bribe and million dollar kick back allegations during his public service assignment as the Union Minister of State for Shipping and Highways, but nothing ever happened, In fact he is back in the reckoning now! H.D. Kumaraswamy: No words can describe this shameless blot on Karnataka. The Gowda clan is an icon of immense corruption and considered the worst betrayers in Indian political history. One can only pray to God that the family gets kicked out to Jharkhand or Bihar. The only exception are Veerappa Moily and S M Krishna, who while being corrupt too, have at least in the past done some good for the common man and state. However, in the midst of the ‘dalit’ Karge tag and ‘loyal’ Singh branding, it is doubt full if performers Moily or Krishna will get any berths, which is really sad for Karnataka.

They saved the day for Nalin as well as BJP. But if there''s any result that is disappointing in the entire state, then it should be of Mangalore. It is so, not because Poojary was defeated but Nalin has won. So far, vote were cast on the basis of caste. But this election has given rise to religious polarization which could spell doom not only for Mangalore but for entire state, if allowed to continue. Those who have voted Nalin, surely have not supported him as person, since hardly 5% of the voters knew him hitherto. At the same time, majority of them have not even supported BJP because, BJP has not done anything spectacular to Mangalore and Mangaloreans in the last one year to support them. Almost 95% of the voters who have backed Nalin or BJP have voted for Hindutva. So here Nalin or BJP are just pawns of the play. I think, even if someone else totally unknown had been given BJP ticket, he would have won. But the question is, does Nalin deserve to be an MP? I say a big NO! I don''t have anything against that man. I think I am one of the few (un)fornuted ones, who knew Nalin quite well for the last 5 years. He is known for the organizational skills in conducting religious programmes of RSS. He was not at all interested in politics. In fact when RSS asked him to contest him from Moodbidri constituency during the last assembly elections, he had said NO to politics. But this time around, RSS somehow managed to drag him in. Now see the paradox. Dakshina Kannada is known to be the district of the educated. And today it is represented by an eighth passed man. (though Nalin has said he has passed SSLC, truth is that he had stopped education at VIII std itself. Ask some of his neighbours and close friends). Can he be a good representative? Moreover, he cannot speak Hindi or English which are used in Parliament and at the national level. Even his Kannada is mixure of Tulu. A person who can hardly understand two of the national-level languages and cannot speak either of them, what he would do at the parliament? He is supposed to represent us, take our woes and problems to higher level. But how would he communicate with those IAS and IPS or other officials of different cadres, who speak in English and Hindi? I am not worried that Poojary is lost, but troubled that an incompetant candidate has won. Even if B Madhav or some independent candidate who is educated had won, there would not have been any problem? Now he who should be the troubleshooter, himself has become troublesome. If Nalin overcomes all these shortcomings and truly represents us, then no problem. He should and would be retained. Or else his going to New Delhi will just be like "Venku going to Panambur".

Of course, none of the government do anything good for poor people in India. It's true that we the citizens of India do not get any support from the government, but at least there was peace in our state when Congress was ruling. I belong to Muslim community but did all my studies in a convent school stayed in the hostel all my life. I can never forget that today whatever I am is because of the school I studied, the environment in which I grew up and of course my parents. Let us question ourselves, how many schools r there where we have only one community students studying..the school which I studied had equal numbers of christians, hindus & muslims..then why this community comes in between..We all belong to one God, of course the way of worship and belief differs...plz do not bring cast into politics, we need a clean government which treats everyone as the citizen of the country.

As long as the old, unproductive leaders of congress in Karnataka are fighting for the election, it will keep loosing every battle. Can any one tell me what has the so called congress leaders like, Poojary,Oscar, Mrs Alva, Moily done to the District of DK & Udupi ? People want better life, development along with peace in the region. Nopw that the verdict is on BJP....we have to wait and see how they will help the region. if they do help in developing the region along with communal harmony between people I am sure that even the minorities will trust them and have faith in them. Congress needs to wake up in the region and do some good amount of work so that people start building thier faith all over again, possible only with some new faces, new leaders....

My only request to the elected Leaders is that...Live up to the promises and faith of the people...Let''s all live in Harmony in the region respecting eachother and showing the world that DK and Udupi region is an example of communal Harmony.....let each of us practise it one by one.....and preach this same messege to all.

Vienna,19-05-2009 The answer to the question is simple. Dakshina Kannada, which boasts of educated elite, is in point of fact is backward and uneducated. The people can not make the difference between the coconut contents and its shell.Even if the shell is a covering only they consider it real fruit. In 19th century, this point was exposed by the great Pandita Ramabai Saraswati of Herinje-Malha in Karkala to the public.

Even then the shell culture survives today saying Sanskrit is great not the literature contents of the language lasting several thousand years.Wake up Mangaloreans. This comment applies also to the Keralites who boast 100 percent literacy rate.Without knowledge literacy is a sham. -Kulamarva Balakrishna

All BJP MPs should switch to congress if they are interested in the devolopment of coastal region because very basis of OP KAMALA was that MLA should belong to the party of Ruling party. Since congress is ruling party at the centre, BJP MP's should change the party in order to devolop Udupi and Mangalore districts. Otherwise all the funds will flow to Andhra, Kerala and Tamilnadu because they elected UPA.So wake up and do something to devolop our districts according to your own logic of OP Kamala

I agree with Mr. Abdul, Its indeed a great relief that Advani is not ruling the country who who studied in a Christian convent school if I am not wrong and now differentaites the casts...One should never vote for someone who considers the cast/religion. The true leader is the one who treats each individual as only an Indian irrespective of the cast or class. Jai Hind.

RSS being a grass root organization is solely responsible for the Victory of Nalin Kumar. Hindutva slogan by BJP and the soft approach to Hindutva by the secular parties has helped also in BJP victory. For lot many years our twin districts have witnessed only prosperity and they do not understand the possible impact of this divisive policies of communal forces on every one`s personal lives, if it is unchecked.

False stories spread by the middle class educated people, has caused the damage to the secular fabric of the districts. In my opinion the greatest loss of votes for Poojary has come from Billavas and other base supporters.Bunts and Billavas put together has placed Nalin in victory stand. It is a sigh of relief that BJP could not come to power in the center and Advani remained a Prime Minister In Waiting.

The Indian National Congress may not do any development like any other political party, but they do not cause hatred amongst communites by vandalising places of worship of minorites like the BJP and they associates or attacking women in pubs by moral policing. Innocent peoples blood on your hand will not keep you in power for long eg. Mr. L K Advani who would probably die as PM in waiting. irrespective of religion and caste people should vote for a secured and safe future.

I guess the MP Mr. kateel has forgotten India is a secular country and should concentrate on basic issues like infrasturcture, education and health care rather than Hindutva which people wouldnt like to hear from a person with a criminal record.

Dear Voters.. Please see to it that the people who you have voted for and have won the MP elections visit your place after the election also and fulfill the promises made by them before the election. If anyone doesn''t visit frequently, and act responsibly, start a public awareness campaign about such irresponsible and opportunist politicians, so that they are out of politics for ever.

This attempt from general public should be a continuous process and not raised only when something goes wrong. Politicians should always be made to think and rethink that they are elected for serving the people and the society and not for their personal motives.

Nagesh keeps harping on the development done by BJP in Karnataka, whereas i dont see the development compared to the other states around Karnataka. I would say most of the people who voted for BJP in Karnataka were those who voted for religion, not development.

As for the Hindutva propogated by the BJP, remember BJP won only once by basing their campaign on the Babri Masjid issue. After that, did they ever win? No. Religion will not win votes in the long run, only development will. Anyway, best of luck for the BJP on their win. Hope they bring peace and prosperity in this region and create more jobs, instead of instigating riots.

Dear Nagesh Nayak, Your analysis of BJP win is totally wrong. What development BJP has done except distributing tax payer''s money to Matts. There is no vision of BJP for Karnataka''s development. As I know there were many Congress leaders who did not wish Poojary to win and they did not do the required ground work. Apart from that money power played very important role in this election. In villages money was distributed as Rs1000/- for each family to vote for lotus. Some of the congress voters were not allowed to vote and ink mark was made by BJP workers even before vote was cast. Even with this they could not lure educated voters of Mangalore where Mr. Poojary got good lead. However I wish Mr. Nalin Kumar will work for the development of Mangalore contrary to the earlier BJP MPs who did nothing for Mangalore. Since he is now representing Mangalore it is his duty to maintain communal harmony and treat all citizens equally irrespective of religion.

THREE MAIN REASON FOR LOTUS BLOOM IN COASTAL KARNATAKA ARE : 1) DEVELPMENT MANTRA BY BJP GOVT. 2) RSS NETWORK 3) HINDUTVA. HARDWORK OF RSS CADRE GAVE THE FRUIT. MR.NALEEN KUMAR IS YOUNG & WILL MAKE MANGALORE CITY & DAKSHINA KANNADA AS MOST SECURED ,MOST DEVELOPED & PEACEFUL CITY. HINDU VOTES ARE UNITED IN COASTAL BELT.

WE WISH ALL OVER INDIA HINDUS SHOULD UNITE TO MAKE INDIA SECURED,DEVELOPED & PEACEFUL COUNTRY. OTHER REASONS FOR LOTUS BLOOM IN COASTAL AREA : 1) UNNECESSARY ACTION BY CONGRESS (GREAT RENUKA CHOWDHARY)ON PUB ATTACK. 2)APPEASEMENT OF MINORITY (JHAHAMPANA GULABI NABI AZAD PROMISED RESERVATION FOR MINORITIES) 3) HOO HAA ON CHURCH ATTACK (NOBODY BOTHERS ON TEMPLE ATTACK & ATTACK ON HINDUS) . JAI BJP.

First we have to see who was responsible for the Lotus to bloom. The bloomed lotus has to shed its petals and to achive it the congress has to undergo a major surgery. Poojary,Moily, Oscar should make way to the young, stop infighting. Still 5 years for LS & 4 years for RS. But congress has to start working now. Then only congress can regain the past glory

It is quite impossible for Congress to curb the lotus bloom in Karnataka. Congress here still relies on outdated leaders like Oscar, Poojary, Ramantha Rai, Moily. On the other hand, BJP has been doing good & with this trend it is impossible for Congress to bloom in future.

Congress lost the battle, in DK, Udipi & Karwar, for that extent K''taka but won the war all over India. Human memory is normally weak and forgiving and forgetting wrong deeds too. Now, coast is in the hands of BJP, pl. try to improve basic amenities in the region and the State Govt.is in BJP hands. Congressmen, its time for introspection and reach out to all sections of soceity, impartially. Nothing great has happend - look at the following statistics - Three in every 10 votes polled in the Lok Sabha election was in favour of the Congress, driving the party to its best performance in about two decades, while its main rival BJP put up its worst show in the same period. Taking its individual tally to 206 seats, the Congress polled 28.55 per cent vote share in the elections for 15th Lok Sabha, up from 26.53 per cent in the last polls. Congress Party, now local body elections are due, you can bounce back with a positive approach... At the same time, BJP''s vote share declined to 18.80 per cent from 22.16 per cent, while the total number of its seats declined to 116 from 138 in the last elections.

It does not require rocket science to know why congress could not stop lotus bloom in coastal Karnataka. In fact, it is congress itself bloomed the lotus. If congress wants to keep the useless people like, Oscar, Moily, Poojary etc who think it is their birth rights to be congress leaders, the lotus will keep blooming always. If congress has to bloom, even the shadow of these people should disappear from the party. Once for all, please understand that no other analysis is required.
