Madikeri, May 22: Relating to the ragging of a student that occurred in a local college and the subsequent death of his relative who had gone to the college to question the offenders, the angry people pressurized the policemen to arrest the culprits. The incident occurred on Thursday May 21 and the situation threatened to deteriorate, with a group of people engaging in a verbal spat with the policemen.

The deceased has been identified as Talatmane Raghunath Marla (47), partner of the hotel functioning in the KSRTC bus stand here and the president of Madenad Block Congress unit.

Bharat V Rai, a resident of Madenad near here, was interested in seeking admission into the BBM course after completing his second PUC. He had visited Field Marshal General Cariappa College here, on Thursday to collect the admission form. Some students, who were in the college premises at the time, reportedly stopped Bharat and started ragging him. Reportedly, they also forced him to remove his pants and when he protested, assaulted him. Bharat had informed the developments to his maternal uncle Raghunat Marla.

When Marla wanted to question the assaulters, the students reportedly entered into a verbal duel with him. As he was pushed forcibly, Marla collapsed to the ground, eye witnesses said. Although he was immediately taken to a hospital, the doctors declared him brought dead.

District superintendent of police Ramesh Harihar lent an ear to the demands of the people and assured that an inquiry headed by the deputy superintendent of police would be held into the episode and that the guilty would be punished. On a complaint filed by Bharat, five students named Mustafa, Sharat, Pradeep, Suresh and Yatish have been arrested.

Dr Kiran Acharya/Manipal, If you teach this moral values for your own family members is really appreciable and acceptable but if you are teaching outsiders by the way of Sri Rama Sene it is not at all acceptable. You do the good deeds and show the way to others follow the good things.

These incidents of ragging by many colleges are only reported when they turn out to get serious i.e. when either some student/person is killed or injured badly in hospital. What about the other ragging incidents that take place in the college campus, where students have gone into depression and losing their state of mind, spoiling their career opportunities and ultimately making them commit suicide.

This is due to some mannerless hooligans / seniors present in the colleges, who themselves are not interested in their careers / studies but are deliberately spoiling others careeer opportunities and making them handicapped for life. These miscreants should be punished harshly.

When moral values are taught by elders, people condemn it as "MORAL POLICING". The present state of affairs amongst the youth is the direct result of this!

Very unfortunate. Do not know why the police hesitate to take action. The guilty should be punished so that it acts as a deterrent.

Feeling very sad to see the news. This is happening due to college management.. the culprits should be thrown out of college and should not be permitted in any other colleges. They should be punished at least 5 years in Jail. So that we can control these types of ragging incidents.

Death means death penalty, If this is true and if the you have 100% proof, then hang all those involved, so that next time no one will dare to such a mistake in their entire life. Ministry of Justice go ahead and pass the death sentence.

How many killings and suicides will have to take place, before making strict laws against Ragging? The perpetrators are young hooligans: simply happend to be in a college campus. Make them to march in the public street, then put them into jail. But, the influential people and politicians will keep the criminals inside a safety net.

It is high time concerned authorities, district adiministration, dept of Education in Govt, come down heavily on these ragging incidents. Inspite of so many such incidents in various places, reported, why nobody bothers to take stern action on the culprits? Just suspend the concerned students from the college and ensure they do not get an admission in any other colleges. If one such action is taken n reported in the media, that a couple of students have no future b''coz of ragging, others will be careful next time & will not dare to do such things. More over raising hands on an elderly person when trying to correct or pacify is height of in- discipline. If still authorities concerned do not take stern actions, we will keep watching news, reading news reports & students will continue ragging n deaths will still continue.. I hope authorities are listening please ..

The culprits should be subjected to the harshest of punishment in the legal system. This will be a precursor for all resorting to ragging is educational Institutions.

Absence of very strict rules and severe punishment on such acts is one of the main reasons these kind of incidents are happening. Punishments should be such that every one should be frightened to do such acts. I need to hear immediate and quick action from educational and govt.athorities.

A very sad news.Authorities of the college are also equally responsible for the sad demise of Mr. Marla. All colleges should strictly impliment "NO RAGGING" in their colleges and the students indulging in ragging should be ruthlessly removed from the college and also such students should not be permitted in any other colleges. Law enforcers should treat them as criminals and punish accordingly. Then only ragging can be eliminated from colleges.

This is yet another incident of innocents being killed by ragging. Why the educational institutes and Police implement a very strict rule to ban ragging. How many more people/students should scarifice their life? Why Student community do more constructive cause than these kind of silly things..there are lot of social welfare activities..like creating awareness to keep the city,school/college campus clean, no smoking, no drugs campaign which can save many lives and many homes. Ragging is a national shame.
