BANGALORE, May 22: It rained heavily on Thursday. And minutes after it started, BBMP control rooms were flooded with calls of water-logging and tree fall. A collapsed compound wall near Sharada talkies, floating parked two-wheelers and cars plying half-submerged on a heavily water-logged Quadrant road in Shivajinagar -- these were just a few on the list.
Till 8.30pm, the Met department had recorded 45.6mm rain. Naturally, roads in several places in the city were spotted water-logged. Perenial flooding sports like Sahakarnagar, RMV II stage and parts of Indiranagar continued with flood complaints this time as well.
"It's been the case for the last 40 years. Nothing has changed'' says Siddaiah, a resident on Indiranagar 80-feet road. A choked storm water drain flooded water on the roads upto six-feet -- behind the Bata showroom, right at the entrance of Indiranagar. There was severe water logging in Koramangala and Byappanahalli.
Mahadevpura control room also received five complaints of water logging and one tree fall. Water seeped in to several houses in Sultanpalya, near P & T colony.
Reacting to the flood complaints in Ejipura, D J halli and Koramangala 4th and 6th block, BBMP additional commissioner (East) S Puttaswamy said that much of it was due to the asphalt works on in DJ Halli that blocked the drains. Parts of Vittal Mallya road was also affected.
While fallen branches upset traffic on Dr Rajkumar road, the sudden collapse of two huge trees on CMR main road in Hennur Banaswadi layout crushed two cars completely. Tree fall in a few other places also affected traffic for a while. Nearly three tree falls were reported in Kammanahalli, near Murphy town church in Ulsoor and in Frazer town. A couple of tree falls were also reported in Chamrajpet and 6th block Sultanpalya.
Water blocked most part of the power station in Adugodi which affected power supply in the area for more than an hour. Power poles broke due to tree falls in Ramamurthynagar and Banaswadi which led to power cuts in parts of the zone. "Adugodi station is filled with water. We are trying to restore power as soon as possible," said a BESCOM official.
