Agra communal violence: Top cop transferred, many arrested

Daijiworld Media Network - Agra (SR)

Agra, Jul 4: DGP OP Singh cracked the whip on several senior police officers including an SSP who were transferred following their mishandling of communal incidents that took place in several parts of UP, including Meerut and Agra.

While speaking to India Today reporters about the seriousness of the issue, DGP warned his colleagues in the department that any careless attitude in policing will not be tolerated.

Within 24 hours of the Agra violence, the Agra SSP Joginder Kumar, who was on leave for a month, has been transferred from the district and replaced by Bablu Kumar as the new Agra SSP.

However, people in Agra are praising the quick decision taken by the DGP and are of the opinion that this move has helped the city from deteriorating further.

The new SSP Bablu Kumar assured that the police will not allow the communal harmony of the city to deteriorate. "How the violence started and why it happened, is being investigated and whoever is found responsible for allowing the situation to aggravate so suddenly, will not be spared. The tourists are still moving freely throughout the city and the markets are completely open. A large contingent of police has been deployed across the city in pickets and the condition is being monitored round the clock," Bablu Kumar said, as per India Today report.
