Mangalore, May 28: Rains coupled with speeding wind caused a house belonging to Sylvester Veigas (45), residing at Lawrence Compound, Jeppu Kudupady near Marnamikatta in the city to collapse, at around 10.30 pm on Wednesday May 27. As the roof and walls of the house came crashing down, Sylvester sustained head injury, requiring multiple stitches. His son Sumit Veigas (14) too was injured in the head and was treated at the hospital. Sylvester's wife Elsie Veigas has no external wounds, bus is suffering from pain in the legs and other parts of the body, caused by falling materials.

Four persons in all, Sylvester, his wife and two children were sleeping at the house when the walls and the roof crashed. The couple's younger son did not suffer any injuries. As the house came down unexpectedly, all the four got buried in the debris. Their neighbourers rushed to the spot and helped in clearing the fallen objects, bringing the family members out and providing them medical treatment. A wooden cupboard, bench etc belonging to the family were damaged in the incident. Sylvester said, the crash has rendered the materials including the roof beams, tiles etc unusable.

The loss due to the crash is estimated at around Rs 75,000. The poor family is at present, forced to find a shelter immediately as the rainy season has begun and schools are set to reopen.
