Mumbai, Jul 23: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA from South Mumbai Raj Purohit, on Monday evening, said the Maharashtra government will not accept the Centre’s Model Rent Control Act. The MLA who holds a cabinet rank, at a meeting called by the Confederation of Tenants of Mumbai South at the Garware Club House assured tenants that the Act would not come into force.
As reported in TOI, Purohit said, “There is a clause in the Centre’s Model Rent Control Act that gives the state government the choice to either opt or not opt for the Central Act. The Maharashtra Rent Control Act is adequate and chief minister is pro-tenant. We will not accept the Centre’s Act.”
Purohit who had steered the state Rent Control Act was not happy on the Act being mentioned in the Finance Bill. The MLA said bureaucrats convinced union finance minister that it would generate a revenue of Rs 4,000 crore, “We will convince the Centre that the government is more important than Rs 4000 crore,” he said. The MLA whose assembly constituency Mumbadevi, predominantly comprises of tenanted buildings said he would have good news for the residents of tenanted buildings in the next fortnight.
"Government Resolutions will be issued making it mandatory for a tripartite agreement between the landlord, developer and MHADA who will represent the tenants. Also, a developer will be allowed to redevelop a property only after he deposits rent for three years in an Escrow account,” Purohit said.
