Hassan: Factory workers’ protest against management turns violent

Hassan, Jul 24: The protests being held by Himatsingka factory workers in Hassan alleging unnecessary assaults and harassment against them turned violent on Wednesday, July 24. Two police staffs have been injured as the result.

Police personnel have been trying hard to control the protesters. They had to resort to tear gas and lathi-charge. Several workers have also been injured, said reports.

Workers are protesting without attending to work. They hurled stones on news reporters and police also.

The workers allege that their dues are not paid and factory is filled with workers from other states. The factory employs more than 4,000 workers. The workers allege that the management is treating them in inhuman manner by violating labour laws.

Two workers are said to be assaulted. Workers from north India also are employed here. A tense situation is formed presently near the factory.

    Jobs to people from Karnataka should be a priority. Let Karnataka too adopt a policy that Andhra Pradesh took-up - 75% reservation for local workforce.

    Labour from other states (especially Northern) is cheaper. Its not just to our workers because sustenance at our place is more expensive than its in UP/Bihar.

    Why don't you shift your factory to North instead ? You are established here because you are nearer to raw-material production - aren't you ? Same applies to workers from Karnataka. Give us jobs first, then to outsiders.

    What Ap has done is wrong..its wrong on part of the states to segrigate on basis of place of birth.....we are united as a nation, why this unnecessary barrier that he is from AP or Karnataka....we are all Indians, its unconstitutional to provide state reservation...hope SC strikes this once for all... otherwise this is going to happen in each and every state....rich states will remain rich and poorer states will suffer.....

    Then, there has to be some way that new jobs are created, so that people don't fight among themselves claiming they are more eligible for the job. The states that has very dense population, give jobs to their workforce, so that they don't have to migrate seeking employment.

    Let the gobernment perform ! Lip-service isn't sufficient.

    99% of outside people are used as labourers, construction workers etc....in our state, especially in DK and UD, all most all hard labor jobs are replaced by biharis, Assamese etc not as they are cheap labor, but at least they work for 6days.... otherwise local people here do not come in time, waste time in phone at working hours and hardly work 6 hours a day...why would a factory owner employee them after investing crores in it?

    Blidly suggesting is easy. Work as HR in factory. You will understand how to deal with unskilled laborers. Managing to unskilled labour is not so easy task. They do not understand statutory requirements. Behave as their boss to the company. Go to Bangalore labour office to understand the facts. Just typing comments will not work good. To meet all the demands of 1000+ employees, got to close the factory itself.

    When supply is more, the price gets cheaper. This applies to both, employee/employer. If there is just one factory and more workers, the owner will try to manipulate them. When there are competitors ready to hire them, the employers loosen their fists a bit. A worker sticks to a job that pays better, doesn't care to go job-shopping.

    HR are people who spoil the employers in an attempt to make policies applicable. They to need their 'daa-galna' you see ??

    In our place you get many white collar job people, but not labourers.....here in hebri normal cooly had been replaced by Assamese, electrical contractors employee Assamese....our state labourers are being lazy, wont work daily, they drink and come all because they don't want work as our govt feeds them freely...

    The scenario in Karnataka facing Jobs is really critical & worth commenting. Although the Indian Constitution guarantees every bonafide Citizen to move freely, settle down, own assets is a birth rite. So, the problem in Karnataka is the lukewarm attitude of locals & laziness minus the spirit of hard work has paved the way for workers from other states to grab the jobs. Who is occupying Goan Streets? Whoever works hard & is honest deserves a slot. If Gulf Countries are what they are today, it is because of expatriate labor force. So lets appreciate if workers are doing a good job & contributing for the development of the State, let us not feel bad.
