Bengaluru: Deve Gowda asks party leaders to be prepared for midterm poll

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Jul 25: "The enthusiasm of the BJP to form a new government in the state is not well-placed. I do not foresee any early end to political instability in the state. Midterm poll may be approaching soon, and our party leaders should be fully prepared to face it," advised national president of the JD(S), H D Deve Gowda.

He gave this advice during the meeting of party legislators and leaders convened here on Wednesday. Acting chief minister of the state, H D Kumaraswamy too echoed similar views. It is gathered.

JD(S) leaders expressed the view that the governor may not invite Yeddyurappa to form the government till the issue of disqualification of legislators is decided by the speaker. As the assembly has 224 members, Yeddyurappa has to prove support of 113 members at least. The BJP now has a strength of only 105 members, they stated. Even if the BJP somehow proves the majority and it gets chance to form the next government, managing of discontentment among the legislators would be hard. Therefore the governor may withhold the permission to the BJP to form the next government, it was generally felt.

"The Lok Sabha session was extended for certain reasons, one of which is the situation in Karnataka. Political instability will worsen and midterm poll will have to be conducted. We have to prepare for the same. If the BJP forms the government, we should become an effective opposition," Deve Gowda stressed.

The meeting also discussed about the desirability of continuing with the coalition politics. It was felt that under the current complex situation, it would be better to continue its association with the Congress. If the Congress takes decision to part ways, the party will go it alone, it was opined. Some leaders demanded that the party should urge the speaker to disqualify the three legislators from the party who have supported the BJP at this juncture.
