Mangaluru, Jul 29: Deputy commissioner (DC) Sasikanth Senthil urged educational institutions to take immediate steps to hunt larvae of mosquito and control dengue.

He was speaking during the meeting that was held with regards to control the larvae and dengue with school and college administration at Town Hall on Monday, July 29.

Sasikanth Senthil said, "Educational institutions should take all kinds of necessary steps to prevent dengue. Dengue is an easily controllable disease. Everyone thinks that these mosquitoes breed from gutter or dirty water, but in this case these mosquitoes breed from fresh water. It is a low-flying, day-biting mosquito. Hostels, work places, schools are more conducive for dengue mosquitoes to breed.”

“People should understand about this disease. We should not allow fresh water to accumulate in terrace, pots and in the surroundings of our houses which gives scope for the mosquitoes to breed. We should take immediate steps to hunt larvae.

The DC further said, "Direct the parents to send their children with their bodies fully covered or apply neem oil. Dengue is very much avoidable as we have reached to critical mass level and we need to control dengue by hunting these larvae.”

“We will give three days’ time for all the educational institutions to clear all the stagnant water and kill the larvae existing in the surroundings of the educational institutions. Ask students to take a round of the school to release all the water collections. After three days, we will send our team to review. If we find larvae, we will take penal action on the institution.

“Every child is an ambassador. If we teach children to hunt these larvae and create awareness, they will definitely protect their parents. Teachers should create some activity or show some videos to create awareness about this larvae and dengue,” he said.

Sasikanth Senthil also urged MCC not to look into any jurisdiction before cleaning and taking any kind of steps as the situation is not right and our focus should be on to prevent dengue. When a teacher questioned about open well, Sasikanth Senthil said, “There are many open wells. These mosquitoes breed on the surface of the water. It is better to put guppy fish in to the well or make sure the well is disturbed every now and then. In coming days we will conduct guppy drive.”

District health officer Ramakrishna Rao, Mohammed Nazir, Gayathri Nayak and others were present.

These mosquitoes are a big menace and creating panic among all including children. It is very difficult to control 100 percent but precautionary measures can be taken as mentioned by DC to control it and to prevent it. During rainy season mosquitoes are a curse.

In Expert PU college alone there are many Dengue cases. This institute is known to produce future doctors as they claim that maximum students make through NEET. But unfortunately Expert classes are pathetic in terms of health and hygiene. Their toilets are worst maintained and are less in number.MCC health inspectors and education department officials are also conveniently silent on these issues. Students get mosquito bites and carry mosquito repellant sprays and rolls to protect themselves. Only few classrooms are air conditioned though the fee taken from all students are same.
