Mangaluru: CM waived fisherfolk's loan of Rs 60.58 crore - Vedavyas Kamath

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jul 30: At a meeting held on Monday July 29, Karnataka chief minister, B S Yediyurappa, took a decision to waive pending loans of fishing community.

The department of fisheries has implemented a scheme under which commercial banks and regional rural banks grant loans to fishermen including women for undertaking fishing activities like fish vending, purchase of equipment, capital for fish business, conservation and transportation of fish and other fishing-related activities. These loans attract two percent per annum rate of interest.

A total of Rs 60.584 crore availed by 23.507 fishermen from the three coastal districts during 2017-18 and 2018-19 was outstanding. As the outstanding liability of Rs 60.584 has been waived by the government, these fishermen would be relieved of their financial problems, would be able to achieve improvement in their standard of living and get opportunity to lead a better quality life in the society.

BJP legislators from Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada districts led by Udupi MLA, Raghupati Bhat, had met chief minister, Yediyurappa, and handed over a memorandum seeking to waive fishing loans. Chief minister, Yediyurappa, who held consultations with the secretary of fisheries department and other officials, signed the order waiving their loans, said Mangaluru city south MLA, D Vedavyas Kamath, in a press release.

Coastal district lost revenue from the formalin found in the fish.
    Goa banned fish from Karnataka.
Government should check the fish on a daily basis detecting formalin in fish or not.

That is surprising within a day of taking oath so many things happened. Fisher men loans waived off- so tax payers be ready for some new tax to make up for this new scheme.
Just a suggestion to any govt which comes to power, stop waving off loans, give them better facilities to continue doing what they are doing in a better manner.
There is a saying that goes : " It is always better to teach the fishermen to fish by giving them a Fishing Bait rather than providing fish to them on a daily basis "
Even Farmers loan - instead of wasting loads of money on unwanted schemes, please provide them with proper water irrigation / water storage / farming instruments with proper infrastructure. This will help them sustain their life style, rather than these sweet nothings as soon as you come to power.
Well not that previous Govt has done anything great but fighting for power & retains their own seats and positions n fill their own pockets.

So when RaGa announced farm loan waivers it was okay in MP, Rajasthan & Ktaka it was okay.
When HDK increased fuel prices in the state by Rs 2 per liter to meet farmer loans , you were okay,
Both the above were immediate priorities . But when Yeddi announces there are concerns. Come on!

Out of whose money did you waiver their loan...?
And is there any measure that you lay on cost of fish they sell ?
Unscientific quoting of high price on fish sale by these fishermen just to make quick and easy money.
Poor or middle class people can't even buy fish due to unscientific fixing of prices on fish by these fishermen. They just quote the unscientific high price of their choice ...
