Bengaluru: Yediyurappa government cancels Tipu Jayanti celebrations

From Our Special Correspondent

Daijiworld Media Network

Bengaluru, Jul 30: Bengaluru, Jul 30: It will be RIP (Rest in Peace) for the celebration of the birthday of the 18th century ruler Tipu Sultan of Mysore also known as Tiger of Mysore, which was being celebrated as a government function throughout Karnataka by the erstwhile Congress government headed by Siddaramaiah apparently with a view to win over the minority Muslim community, as the BJP government headed by Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa has decided to scrap it throughout the State.

While the Congress party leaders stoutly defended the observation of Tipu Jayanti started by the Siddaramaiah regime from 2015, the opposition BJP had opposed the celebration as the party had termed the 18th century ruler as a ``tyrant’’ who committed atrocities against the other minority community of Christians and also the Kodavas.

Soon after passing the floor test in the State Legislative Assembly on Monday, one of the first major decision taken by Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa was to cancel the observation of the Tipu Jayanti celebrations by the Kannada and Culture Department throughout the State.
The decision to scrap the Tipu Jayanti was taken based on a representation to the State Government by Virajpet BJP MLA K G Bopaiah, former speaker of Karnataka Assembly.

The Siddaramaiah regime had started the Tipu Jayanti as a State Government function, which was first entrusted to the Minority Welfare Department and subsequently entrusted to the Kannada and Culture Department.

However, there were widespread protests in different parts of the State, especially in Kodagu district and Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts. It even led to bandhs and violent clashes resulting in the death of a person in Kodagu district and loss as well destruction of private and public properties.

The BJP had even threatened to scrap the Tipu Jayanti after coming to power.

Tipu had ruled Mysore kingdom from 1750 till his death in a battle in Srirangapatna in May 1799.

BJP had promised in its assembly election manifesto of 2018 that it will cancel Tipu Jayanti if the party attains power in the state. In addition, the BJP leaders had protested against the government sponsoring the event.

K G Bopaiah of BJP had requested for the cancellation of Tipu Jayanti during the regime of the previous governments due to the clashes that occurred in Madikeri during the celebration. In his appeal, Bopaiah had said, "There were protests against the celebration of Tipu Jayanti from various districts of the state, including the district of Kodagu. In addition, people have lost their lives also in the clashes. There was widespread damage to public property. Even today, the communal harmony of the district is disturbed." In the background of all these developments, Bopaiah had appealed to take out an official order to cancel Tipu Jayanti celebration.

The appeal of former speaker K G Bopaiah was presented in the cabinet meeting that was held on July 29. The cabinet has ordered to cancel the Tipu Jayanti that was being celebrated state-wide during the past two governments. Accordingly, an official order to this effect is given by the government.

By the time our people understand it, they'll be celebrating Yedi's / Modi/Mamta Banerrjee's/Omar Abdullah's b'days! Learn from the past and understand that leaders will always be as good/bad as the laws of the country. As long as we are divided on various fronts, we will only have options to choose uneducated(thugs) politicians who'll bring financial and cultural ruin to the country. Doesn't matter Congress or BJP or any other party.
Dividing people on communal grounds and ruling will only take us to darkness.
Why do we even need holidays for everyone's b'days? We've more holidays than any other country and we have time to fight and argue about non-issues, while the needy don't get their dues even after years of India's freedom!
LISTEN to/HEAR WHAT THE POLITICIANS TALK ABOUT! SOUNDS LIKE GOSSIPING NEIGHBOURS!
As long as we don't open our minds, we will be in darkness!

Bhkths and sick minded are victims of their British ancestors. British succeeded by spreading propaganda to defeat tipu... bundles of lies about Sultan they filled to children's of those who were spying for them. Obviously they ruling the nation now. BJP always followed their ancestors by devide and rule policy. Shame on those brains which doesnt open to study and understand Tipus real story from real historians.. RIP TRUTH.

Yes it was Hindus who suffered. What I meant was while Islam had been established in South India, it wasn't in North India. So basically the people living in India were Hindus. Coming to Tippu, he killed thousands of Mangalore Catholics and coorgis because he thought they associated with the British. Tippu is a mass murderer undoubtedly but the majority community doesn't have to hate him because he renovated/improved temples, donated etc.

He got scared and left torturing Hindu community and started renovating temples and given donations. Gone are the days.. Kiran, Mangalore detailed about our community in short very beautifully. History cannot be changed. Tippu was a ruler and ruled over Mysore and fought valiantly against the British. He did this to protect his own kingdom and not for India, the same way as a Rana Pratap or any of the rulers of petty kingdoms across the subcontinent did until the beginning of the 19th century, when the concept of one united and free India was born.
The catholics of Mangalore and the Kodavas of Coorg have every reason to hate Tippu as he perceived these two communities as his enemies and tried to decimate them. It was nothing but an attempt at ethnic cleansing. He saw both these communities as the ones who were supporting the British. Both these communities suffered persecution and misery under Tippu. I don't think he was against the catholics from elsewhere, because he was aided by catholic France in his fight against the British. His targets were only the Mangalorean catholics. At the same time I don't see any reason why the hindus of today have to hate him, when he had contributed towards building and renovation of many temples across his kingdom, had hindus as ministers in his court and also his army had many hindus in it.
The BJP and its followers of today, simply hate him because he was a muslim ruler and for not other valid reason.

Maybe if you go around Kerala and see all the temples that lay in ruin today you'll realise the scale of his atrocities towards the Hindus. Hundreds if not thousands of temples were destroyed by him in Kerala alone. So yes Hindus too have every right to have hatred towards that man. No need to go so far to Kerala,His soldiers went around demolishing one guthu house after another in various tulu speaking areas. I've seen guthu houses that are nothing but one a few pillars now because him and his men didn't just loot all the gold and valuables from these houses but they also made sure to destroy the houses. He had also come to destroy and loot Sharavu temple but in the last minute decided against it. Dotted in Kerala you can see all the ruins of various temples and also the enshrined idols broken and thrown out of the gudis. Just because he visited a few temples and had Hindu ministers in his court doesn't change the fact that he destroyed temples, built mosques over them, raped, murdered and forced thousands of Hindus to convert.

Though I am not a BJP supporter. I admire BSY on this great step. The previous Govt was hell bent on appeasing only one section of the minority when other was just a vote bank. Many bhagyas, welfare schemes, previliges like foreign pilgrimage were confined only to a certain minority. Good that Govt was voted out.

Tippu Sultan, was a tyrant, responsible for committing genocide on Hindus and Mangalorean Christians !!! Vivdly recall the brutal episodes, passed down to me, by my grandfather and their forefathers .... History depicts, the destruction of temples and churches, rapes and slaughter of men, women and children, he converted thousands to Islam, those who refused, he imprisoned and killed them !!!!!!!! Truly commend the CM Yediyurappa, for abolishing the celebrations of this barbaric inhuman monster !!!!!!!!

Tipu Sultan was a ruler of the Kingdom of Mysore renowned for his bravery in the wars against the British East India Company. Well known for his valor and courage, he is regarded as the first freedom fighter of India for his fierce battles against the British who tried to conquer the territories under the sultan’s rule. The Treaty of Mangalore, which he signed with the British East India Company to bring an end to the Second Anglo-Mysore War, was the last occasion when an Indian king dictated terms to the British. As the eldest son of Sultan Hyder Ali of Mysore, Tipu Sultan ascended to the throne after the death of his father in 1782. As ruler, he implemented several innovations in his administration and also expanded the iron-cased Mysorean rockets which he would later deploy against the advances of the British forces. His father had diplomatic political relations with the French and thus Tipu Sultan had received military training from French officers as a young man. After becoming the ruler, he continued his father’s policy of aligning with the French in their struggle against the British. He fought several wars against the British and tried his best to defend his kingdom from falling into the hands of the British East India Company. Committed to his country till the very end, he died while fighting in the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War.

To celebrate this historical figure who was one of the most popular rulers hailing from India, British luxury car manufacturer Rolls Royce has unveiled a special edition Ghost, based on the Extended Wheelbase Ghost Series II. Called the Ghost Mysore... The whole World knows about Tipu.. History cant be changed.. BJP has only one agenda that is divide and rule..

The Congress had initiated this Jayanthi celebrations only to appease a certain community. It was forced on the people by the Govt. The founder of this Jayanthi was later booted out of his home constituency by 80000 votes and then reduced to a peon of the previous CMs wife. Good its cancelled. A tight slap on the face of the ones who implemented, followed and celebrated this unwanted Jayanthi.
