Bantwal, Jun 10: In view of incessant rains that have been lashing the catchment areas and all parts of Dakshina Kannada district since a week, Thumbe vented dam located near here that is the main source of drinking water supply to Mangalore city, has started overflowing, as the water crossed the 13 ft, which is the height of the dam. The crest gates, which were holding the water flow, were opened on Wednesday June 10 morning. The crest gates will once again be installed at the end of the monsoon season, in order to maintain water level in the dam, to be able to meet water requirement during the summer.
The water level is now being steadily maintained at 5 feet 5 inches. The opening of crest gates also cleared the logs and other forest vegetation that had clogged at the water barrier. It will also facilitate smooth running of heavy duty electrical motors that pump water to nearby reservoir for onward delivery to overhead tanks located at strategic points across the Mangalore city.
