Bengaluru, Aug 1: In a worldwide rankings published on Wednesday, Bengaluru was ranked as the best city in India for students. On the global level, London claimed the first place for the second time in a row, while Tokyo and Melbourne came second and third respectively. The ‘QS Best Student Cities Ranking’ was carried out by education consultancy QS Quacquarelli Symonds.

In India, Bengaluru tops the list while securing the 81st rank globally, followed by Mumbai (85), Delhi (113) and Chennai (115). Over 120 cities were considered and ranked on the list.

The rankings was based on six categories; the number of top-ranked universities, proportion of a city’s population made up of students, quality of life on offer, job opportunities available after graduation, affordability and the feedback of students themselves. The QS ranking referred Bengaluru as a 'leading technology exporter' as the city has several renowned research institutions and universities. The foremost institutions, Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and the Indian Institute of Management-Bangalore (IIMB) are located in Bengaluru.

The affordability indicator of the city was ranked seventh among the 120 cities surveyed, owing to the low cost of living and tuition fees. Meanwhile, London secured the top position for world-class education provided in the city. The number of Indian students coming to London registered a hike of 20% in 2017-18, marking a steep increase from 4,545 in 2016-17 to 5,455 in 2017-18.
