Mangalore, Jun 15: The annual ban on deep sea fishing along the coast will be in effect from Monday June 15. As a result, all the boat owners have anchored their boats along the seashore and the fishermen have geared up for a period of rest up to August 10.
The annual ban on fishing for 40 days is in the months from June to August because this is the time the fish breed. The ban will be applicable to those who go into the deep seas through mechanized boats, trawlers, and country boats which use engines over 10 HP.
The ban in Uttara Kannada district will be from Monday June 15 to July 31.
Ramesh Suvarna, a fisherman and also a boat owner, said, “This ban is helpful in getting more yield. The 40-day ban may be seen as a problem by some fishermen, but it is a rule fishermen must follow and we are following it by anchoring the boats along the sea shore”, he said.
The fishing ban has been brought in with the aim of sustaining the marine life and has helped increase the yield in previous years.
Another fisherman said that some people violate the ban by avoiding the officials, but because of the memorandum by the fishermen associations, the government has decided not to provide subsidy on diesel which is used in these boats.
Sadashiv Kotian, another senior fisherman said, “The season comes to an end on a disappointing note as 15 boats went for fishing, but only four returned with full catches. Compared to last year, fishing this year has proven very disappointing”. However, he added that there was plenty of ‘Bangude’ (Mackerel).
The district administration which issued the ban notice also warned violators of strict action.
