Manglaore, Jun 26: Jack fruit, which is called the poor man’s fruit, is being given a place of prominence at the exhibition being exclusively held to showcase its immense possibilities, at the Agricultural Science Centre in Yekkur, which was inaugurated on Friday, June 26. During the two-day fair, besides creating awareness about the advantages and different uses of the fruit, sale will also be held at the venue.

S D Sampath Samrajya, president, Zilla Krishika Samaj, who inaugurated the Mela, said that the fruit, which abounds during the rainy season, has medicinal value too. The growers in the rural areas store the fruit up to a year, as they are aware of its true value, he noted.  He lamented, that in several places, jack fruit trees are being felled, because of the fact that its wood fetches good value in the market.

Jack fruit growers from Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and also some from Bangalore exhibited jack fruits. Some of the delegates presented talks about the jack fruit delicacies and about the methods of storing the fruit longer.

Several farmers from these districts too are participating in this two-day seminar cum exhibition.

There are 22 varieties of jack fruit on display at the exhibition. The organizers also explained about the uses and the storage of jack fruit.

This programme is being arranged by the Agricultural Science Centres of Kankanady and Brahmavar and the horticulture department in association with with Krishika Samaj.

Officials of the horticulture department T R Guruprasad and Hema were present.

From B C Road to Suratkal all trees closer to NH were cut to widen the highway. Now they should plant the mango and jackfruit trees and protect them so that they will yeild fruits for our next generation.

Nice pictures thanks to daijiworld. Most of the NRI''s children have not eaten this delicious mouth watering fruit in their life time, if parents are  abroad for a quite a lot of time. Only by pictures children should know what is and how the jack fruit  looks like!! We all miss the seasonal fruits and vegetables all the time!.. Home Country is far more better for everything.

Pelakai, Gujja, Bole are all part of our great tuluva culture and we NRIs have missed it a lot. Nobody can hide a ripe jackfruit in their home, as it gives out a strong and mouth watering smell. Just tempting and cant say no to the mouth watering smell. Good photos and write up by Daiji Team. Great work in bringing lost memories back.

Many thanks to DAIJIWORLD for covering such an exhibition which would not only justify your role as an electronic media support for farming community in conveying the glory of otherwise low profile village produce but also remind many of our readers especially from the rural upbringing, their childhood hardships and Jackfruits untiring support during hungry moments.

It is a great step by Krishi Vijnyana Kendra, towards promotion of village produce with a view to generate strong customer-base. Proper promotion and value addition to low profile village produces such as Jack Fruits, Sweet Potatoes, etc., will generate livelihood to many families in rural Karnataka. Any such move towards that direction will motivate the villagers to concentrate on their farming activities and proper marketing support will benefit the region.

.It gaves me flashback of our own farm land where we had a lot of jack fruit trees and from which i can recognize every verity of fruits which are shown here. There was a larg tree we had in our farm land, which was producing fruits each was weighting around 125 to 150 kg.One of the largest fruit i have ever seen. But now!!!Most of them including this tree cut down for farming purposes and some of them for our own greedysess. It feels very bad.
