Mangalore Jun 28: A discussion on `responsibility of writers in society’ was held at the Bishop's House here on Sunday, June 28. The programme organized jointly by Konkani Writers' Forum and `Raknno' Konkani Weekly, was inaugurated by Fr Francis Rodrigues, the editor of Rakno weekly.

Speaking at the programme, Fr Francis Rodrigues said that every job comes with a certain responsibility. But, writers have a greater responsibility for their message and writings influences people. Therefore a writer should be aware of his social responsibility.

Fr Rodrigues felicitated three writers, Paul Moras, E S Moodbidri and Yashavanth D S on the occasion. Flt. Lt Edi Netto was the chief guest of the inaugural programme.

Participating in the discussion, Chidambar Baikampady, said in the recent years the writers are facing the same problems that the entire society has been facing. The interest of some writers represent interest of the public. The phenomenon can be compared with that of the present programmes in the media as well as news stories, he said.

However, in the pre-independence period it was witnessed that all of the writers were writing for independence and the same writers after independence focused on problems plaguing the country. These problems have not seen solutions yet, he said.

Writer Paul Moras said that the encouragement and support are the only mtivation for any writer. His expression through his work can be moulded and changed only when it is accepted by the readers. Constructive criticism is the key for the growth of any writer.

Hemacharya, a litterateur and editor of Daijiworld Weekly presided. The members of the forum and Konkani writers took part in the discussion.

Forum president Marcel D'Souza welcomed the gathering and treasurer J F D'Souza welcomed the chief guests to the dais. Tony Feros Jeppu and Dimple Fernandes Veeranagar compered the programme.

Surprised to note that how come a leading Konkani weekly Raknno and Konkani writers Forum could organise such an important discussion in such a mess? Mr Chidambara was better. But What Paul Moras has spoken is too silly.

Mr Chidambar Baikampady I apreciate your humblness in expressing your honest feelings. I have said in my comment that you could have been given a topic related to Journalism or Media. I have been in the Print Media & Journalism directly since 15 years, hence I have certain ability to differentiate between literature, journalism and social issues. It was the fault by the organisers and you dont need to say sorry for it. Yet you are honest in accepting the feedback of an audience and respecting it. Hats off to you Sir. My conern was, particularly in Konkany seminars, as I have witnessed many times, there is always more Jollu than Kaalu. The matter was of Social Responsibility and it was obviously proved that Konkany Individuals & Organisations do not have it. You were invited to give a talk on an important subject and you were simply made to wait for hours. It really hurts. Thank you Sir.

I strongly support & agree HM Pernal''s views. I felt very happy that a program like ''Social Responsibility of Writers'' was arranged finally. But as usual, it''s become a habbit that all Konkany programmes waste precious time of audience. Every Konkany programe I attend makes me disappoint. I dont understand why organisers are behind unworthy maan-sanmaan always and cut the time allocated for the main agenda.

Yesterday also same thing happened. I had come to take part in the discussion but the talks started at 11.45 am. When interaction begins time gets over & everbody becomes hungry and just skip discussions. Secondly, I dont understand why organisers fail to find proper resource persons. Paul Moras & Chidambar Baikampady are not at all the ideal persons for the above subject. Chidambar could have been given any topic related to journalism. I have not seen any Konkany writers thinking (or writing) beyond the line of only Konkany Christian Community. No one has clear vision, hence they do dont even like others having vision.

Yesterdays talks were nothing related to the topic and were of below average. Why such programmes should be conducted? Yesterday''s programme was very disappointing to me and I dont understand when our writers & organisers mature & think wisely. I urge young, energetic Konkany writers themselves should attempt to do something. I fully support them.

When we talk about konkani writers responsiblity in society they can influence the culture and daily life style of common person it is a notable fact that it not enough support from the community to the writers talents, they cannot only concentrate in writting alone but also look for other souces for the income I appreciate with all obstacles there are some writers uphold the language and traditions and culture morality. which is praiseworthy.

It seems those who are posting comments here below were not present at the session. Still I second Mr. Stan’s view. Honestly , I do not know when we the konkani writers and our forums grow and mature. Both the papers presented were totally out of topic and context and there was no space available for discussion. What an irony ? As Chidambara Baikampady rightly mentioned KWF and Raknno have sold the “ Discussion Space “ for maan sanmaan and pradhaan soyro . If KWF or Raknno really wants to have a fruitful discussion on any subject related to Konkani it should not be clubbed with maan - sanmaan , pradhan soyro – jevan etc. There should be a clear vision and focus should be only on papers and discussion. The need of the hour is to categorically define what is “ society “ and what is “ responsibility “ in particular for Konkani writers. Our society is only typical mankri ( mangluri kristhanv ) None of the speakers spoke about growing communal hatred in Mangalore , SEZ , shrinking space for raising the voice against injustice. Writer can express their social responsibility primarily through their writings. The point here is where is the space ? Now literally two weeklies are calling the shots in Mangalore. One is patronized by dioceses the other by some capitalists and cultural organizations. Former will not publish if you criticize about dioceses and latter will not publish if you criticize about its ad patrons and cultural organizations. It is disgusting that none of the speaker focused on this shrinking space in the media and society.

Writers time and again have to focus on reinvention. Radical changes in our attitude, form and presentation are the key factors for the growth. Regular meetings and exchange of ideas should help up us in changing ourselves for a better tomorrow. I hope to see more of such discussions to enhance the spirit of literature.

Hats off to you for taking up the noble cause of journalism. Firmly believe that writers keep up the Social Responsibility, keeping in mind "It is not enough to be good, but appear to be good"

Congratulations to dear Fr Francis Rodrigues and all those who are responsible for organising a discussion on "responsibility of writers in society". It was the need of the hour. Let us hope that the discussion will bear positive results in the coming days. Long Live Konkanni literature. Thanks daiji for your informative report.
