Kundapur, Aug 31: The court here pronounced the judgement in which it Hindu priest as not guilty. The priest had come for a wedding programme of Dalit community but had refused to conduct wedding rituals.

Priest Krishna Murthy Bhat alias Babanna Bhat had arrived to conduct wedding rituals of Dalits in Annappayya auditorium, Kundapur on June 5, 2013. The priest had refused to conduct the rituals when more than one thousand guests had arrived. The elder brother of the bride who felt humiliated by this had complained to Gangolli police station.

Police had arrested Bhat. The then Kundapur DySP Yashoda Ontigoodi had submitted a chargesheet to the court.

Advocate Ravikiran Murdeshwar argued for the defense saying that accused Bhat had refused to perform the rituals as he had no experience of conducting them in the case of scheduled caste.

Udupi district and sessions judge C M Joshi, who heard the case, declared Babanna Bhat as not guilty.

the priest could have conducted the marriage as per brahmin rituals...as per Hindutva, no difference within Hindus...brahmin or dalith same status in Hindutva... Naavella Hindu, Naavella Ondu...many intercaste marriages have taken place between Dalith and Brahmin (Ramdas Athavale, Ramvilas Paswan for example), in this era of Hindutva (since 2014) it is wrong to differentiate as per caste...

The priest must have been dumb-struck seeing such a large crowd. What use is it if he muttered some nonsense which no one understood while appearing to perform the rituals?

Are Daliths not a part of Hindu Dharma? Such incidents go on to prove the hypocrisy prevailing in the society. When it comes to votes or attacks on minorities, Daliths are our brothers. But, they are treated as substandard when matters related to religious ceremonies, functions and distribution of prasada are conducted.

True "varna system" was not by birth. It is by way of living . Don't confuse it with birth. Understand "GEETHA"

Dalits are used as mere vote bank. They are treated as second class human beings. This type of attitude is unfortunate and this anti-national element needs immediate and intense treatment.
