London, Feb 23: India marked a proud moment at the BAFTA Awards 2026 as the Manipuri-language film Boong bagged the prestigious Best Children’s & Family Film award, outshining strong international contenders.

Backed by Farhan Akhtar, the emotional drama triumphed over nominees including Arco, Lilo & Stitch, and Zootropolis 2. The win is seen as a significant milestone for Indian cinema, particularly for films emerging from the Northeast, highlighting how regional stories can resonate globally. Farhan Akhtar attended the ceremony along with his wife Shibani Dandekar.

Directed by Lakshmipriya Devi, Boong — which means “little boy” in Manipuri — narrates the poignant story of a young boy growing up in Manipur amid social and political unrest.

The film follows Boong, portrayed by Gugun Kipgen, who dreams of reuniting his fractured family. Convinced that bringing back his missing father would restore happiness to his mother Mandakini, played by Bala Hijam, Boong embarks on a journey with his best friend Raju, portrayed by Angom Sanamatum. Their search takes them to the border town of Moreh and even across into Myanmar.

Prior to its theatrical release in September 2025, Boong had an impressive festival run. It premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2024 and was later screened at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne, the MAMI Mumbai Film Festival, and the Warsaw International Film Festival, earning widespread critical acclaim.

The BAFTA win further cements Boong as a landmark film, showcasing the strength of regional Indian storytelling on the global stage.
