Moodbidri, Aug 31: Assistant teacher of a school has made a revolution in the campus of the school with her own personal expense and turned the area that was lying vacant into a lush green arecanut farm.

Janet Lobo, who is serving as an assistant teacher in the Mantradi government school of the taluk since 15 years, is lauded by the villagers surrounding the school for her effort of converting the barren land around the school into prosperous arecanut farm. Janet has spent Rs 50,000 of her personal money to get the land levelled for planting the arecanut saplings. As many as 105 arecanut saplings are planted and they are being nurtured and taken care by erecting a protective fence around them.

Janet has also made water facility that is required for the plants. Janet has taken up this noble cause with the intention of not only making the campus of the school lush green but also of utilizing the income from the farm for the development of the school in future, when the plants grow into trees and start giving yield of arecanut.

Two years ago, an education officer, who had visited the school, had given the advice to grow vegetable plantation around the school on the land that was left vacant. But Janet got inspiration from another teacher who has made similar cash crop plantation and decided to plant arecanut saplings. Her husband, transport entrepreneur, Ronal F Cardoza also encouraged the good thought of Janet and provided her all the complimentary support. Sundara Poojary and Naveen Naik are providing the manure required for the farm after the saplings were planted.

Vegetable farm for Bisiyoota lunch

In addition to the arecanut farm, the school has also developed a vegetable farm with the help of teachers, members of SDM and old students of the school. This has helped to provide nutritious food to the students of the school in the afternoon for the Bisiyoota. The coconuts required for the Bisiyoota are also available from four coconut trees that are planted around the trees. In addition, five coconut saplings are also planted. Jackfruit is available during the season from the five jackfruit trees in the school campus.

Donors, villagers and old students of the school also have joined hands in the development of the school.

Damn good business minded citizen. She planted Areca instead of coconut as that can fall on the head of the students. My respects to this wonderful human.

    Madam,
You are above all of us on your Gift to Mother Nature!
More than that, you are the Role Model to your Students.
The Education Officer who persuaded/ advised you to get this Noble work done, also would have given ideas to other schools. But, we are yet to see those in REALITY!!!

Dear Madam, you are the best inspiration for students in India, not only limited to your school.
I suggest you or your head teacher must contact national geography and share this story so that not only in India, but overseas.

Its a rare feat that your kind hearted efforts are recognized and felicitated.
Its a great effort in showing children how to preserve/conserve environment and sow the seeds of environmental care in the young minds of your wards.

Amazing to see that such good hearted teachers still exist. It is important that students also learn the importance of trees and their influence on our environment.
I would suggest that pepper can be also grown on these trees to further utilise the resource available and add to the income that will help the school.
    God bless this teacher.

Acts of this nature are inspiring in the midst of all kind of sick news of suicides, killings, economy falling, unemployment.
Salute to the great teacher. The local people must unite and return Rs 50,000 to the teacher and also felicitate her and recommend her for Rajyotsava award.

She is doing a commendable job when most are busy trying to garner short term wealth at nature's cost!

Would urge, all interested in nature, to read: THE HEALING POWER OF FORESTS BY PROF. MIYAWAKI!!

    MIYAWAKI METHOD FOR DENSE FOREST
Forest cover is being reduced at an alarming rate. Century old trees are being brought down in few hours. This loss is irreversible. But there is a solution to bring back the lost green cover quickly. Miyawaki method of tree plantation grows saplings 10 times fast and the forest is 30 times more dense. In just 2 years the forest growth is unimaginable. Miyawaki forest is answer to cities which are turning to concrete jungles. Small patch of forests in multiple locations within the city will act as carbon sink for the city.
