Mangalore, Jul 3: The intermittent rain in the district has led to the collapse of two houses near Ullal in Mukkacheri on Friday July 3.
These houses situated near the sea shore had been damaged by increased sea erosion following the start of the monsoon. However, the residents had vacated the houses in June when the rains began thus, preventing casualties.
The houses belong to Zubeda and Athimol who have shifted to their relatives’ house near Thokkottu. Two other houses are in danger of collapsing and the residents of these houses have been relocated.
As efforts by the government to control sea erosion over the years have failed due to improper planning, it has become a recurrent problem during the monsoons. The residents near the sea shore live in constant fear of erosion which is eating away at the land, increasingly threatening their homes.
Town municipal officials visited the spot after receiving a complaint from the owners of the collapsed houses.
The dumping of boulders has also failed to control erosion as the stones slip down due to the force with which the waves pound them.
