Udupi, Jul 6: The low lying areas across the city, including Kadiyali, Kalsanka, Bailakere, Mathurachakra, Gundibailu, Kodavoor, Moodabettu etc., were inundated at around 3.30 am on Monday Jul 6, owing to the incessant rain that has been lashing the coastal districts since the last several days. The normal life of the citizens of the town has been thrown out of gear, owing to the unexpected flash floods, reminding one of the similar floods that were witnessed here about 16 years ago. The stranded flood victims were ferried to safety in the boats provided by the district administration. They have been temporarily accommodated in Sri Krishna Mutt here, where they are being provided with food by the Mutt authorities.
Holiday has been declared for the schools across the district, since only a few students arrived at the schools on Monday July 6 morning. The rain water was found to be profusely dripping into the office premises, from the roof of the Zilla Panchayat (ZP) office here, owing to which, the files and fixtures had to be hurriedly shifted. As a result, the normal working of the zilla panchayat was disrupted on Monday.
City suburb of Siribidu was also inundated owing to the storm water, since the silt from Kalsanka minor tributary of Swarna rivulet was not cleared ahead of monsoon season, by the civic body.
