M'lore: Incessant Rains in Dist – Citizens Harried Due to Artificial floods, Road Blocks

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (RS/SB)

Mangalore, Jul 6:
The incessant rains that have lashed the district since past few days have caused inconvenience to residents in city and outskirts. While residents of some areas in the city faced the wrath of artificial floods with houses being partially inundated in water, on the other the vehicular traffic was blocked hours on end due to damaged roads, courtesy heavy rains. Following this, deputy commissioner in-charge Prabhakar Sharma has announced two days of holidays to the schools in the district.

Inconvenience due to artificial floods

The residents of layout in Subhash Nagar, Pandeshwar and Shivanagar in Attavar in the city were literally on a house arrest after their locality was inundated with water due to artificial floods. The water which did not find their way out from the area due to ineffective storm water drains moved into the houses of the people creating problems to undertake routine activities such as cooking. The children and office-goers stayed back home due to artificial floods that crippled their free movement outside the house.

The residents of the area complained that poor drainage system and clogged storm water drain are the main reasons for artificial floods. Suresh, a resident of the area said that despite several reminders during the summer season, Mangalore City Corporation failed to respond to our call. Now we are bearing the brunt of MCC’s negligence, he said. Vijaya, a house wife said that she was shocked to see the hall of her house inundated with water when she woke up in the morning.

Subhash Nagar, which comes under three MCC wards, has three corporators in-charge of the area. Two of the three coprorators, Muralidhar Bolar and Premananda Shetty, who arrived at the affected areas after telephone calls by the residents, however denied that poor maintenance of storm water drain was the reason behind the artificial floods. They said that as the area was close to the river, the higher water level prevented water from the area to pass through storm water drains into the river.

Further, a group of residents alleged that their corporator and former mayor Ashraf was not picking up their calls and has not responded to their grievances presented during the summer season.

Road block

The hillock on Pumpwell-Kankanady road collapsed due to incessant rains causing traffic block for few hours. Fire department had to be summoned to clear the road for the traffic.

On the city outskirts, the national highway was blocked for over five hours from Padil to B C Road, which was caused due to a large pothole on the road near Adyar. Among the traffic that queued on the road were vehicles carrying students, both school-goers and college-goers, office-goers and daily commuters. Due to the traffic block that lasted until noon students had to forego their classes. The pothole saw a temporary repair when local residents chipped in to help the passengers.

Mangalore/Udupi Muncipalities has to be provided with some technical equipment deal with such emergency situations. These both cities are growing now and comparing to the other cities we are lacking lot of dedication, determination from our civil teams including mayors, corporaters, other civil/sub- contractors. There is a lot corruption, low quality civil works are taking place within the citiy limits and the rural areas too.A lot of Government money and poor peples tax money been going to currupted civil and polital hands, whom to question when the entire system is corrupt? For example:Near my house in Moodubidri,RS 65,000 was pased for a constructing a cannal for a road (Mori)against rain water flow, but a local sub-contractor brought a road''s width concrete pipe and buried against the road, which cost him only RS 6 to 8 thousand rupees, and i heard, the entire work has been washad away by this year''s rain.Where the remaining money gone? Why there is no warranty for the project?Who is suposed to look after all this?Whom to ask.........????

Mr Alibayar, you are in one way right with your sentiments. But it is not wrong when one enjoy the beauty of nature thru the pics. Natural calamities like flooding/cyclones happen all over the world but it does not mean that people stop praying for rain. Without rain the whole world would be a desert like how it is in the gulf region. People those who do not get to see and feel the real rain enojoy it thru the pics. There is nothing wrong in that.

Very beautiful pictures. Thanks to Daijiworld and Daya. No one should curse or grumble rain as it is required for well being of all living thing on earth. Instead our Govt should take precautions to harvest the rain water in a proper way which can be used through out the year, especially in those states where people will wait for a single of water during summer time.

When the water comes above our nose where we can not breathe that will be too late. Pls wake up Govt and let the local people have their peaceful living even during monsoon.

Nobody should blame for monsoon rains, instead blame on poor administration. Rains won''t come when we ask for, but when it rains we have to fully utilize it in the form of rain-water harvesting. Monsoon is backbone of entire nation

Couldn`t agree more with all the above commentators about the superb photography, and as Jaimini of Manipal said, 3rd photo viz. the oncoming train with the flood and forestry greenery behind is my pick of the lot as well. Brought back vivid memories of monsoon days/floods and my own experiences in my childhood. However, I would like to convey my deep sympathies and sorrow to all those families and people that are suffering owing to these floods and would strongly urge the Authorities concerned to do everything possible to mitigate their sufferings and losses on an urgent basis. Thanks Daijiworld for the excellent coverage.

All the people in the gulf feel very happy seeing rains, but they fail to realise how much our people home suffer due to excessive flooding. Rains are good no doubt for the crop but excessive rains causing flooding and collapse of hills, and pictures of houses filling the houses certainly is not something we should be happy about.

Nice & great pictures of monsoon season from daijiworld. From the pictures I can make out the inconvenience caused to the people of various walks of life specially school going children, college students & office attending people. The main reason for artifical rain water flooding is that our authorities concerned pay no attention for the rain water drainage systems. Further, authorities concerned can clear up the drains well in advance before the rainy season to avoid artificial flooding during rainy season. Do v have a stand by work force to help the people affected by floods in times of emergency from the authorities concerned? Do v have help lines so that people can call in times of emergency in case of water logging & road blocks due to floods during the rainy season?

One can''t prevent nature''s fury, however it is always wise to buy home insurance cover, which will be very handy during these times, usually the insurance will cover all accidental, fire, lightening etc and inclduing natural perils (such as these, earthquake etc.).
