Mangalore: Rain Continues to Play Havoc - Two Drown , Property Damaged

Mangalore, Jul 8: The heavy rainfall in the coastal district continued causing widespread damage and destruction all around the district. Two people have been killed and the damage to private property in the district is substantial.
Veerayya, a labourer, drowned in river water near Dambel in Urva Store police station limits. In the evening, Ashraf drowned in the sea near Someshwar Uchila, and the complaint has been lodged with Ullal police in this regard.
But his body has not been located yet. It is said that Ashraf was standing by the sea shore with his friends when a high tide pulled him in.
Eight houses have been completely damaged and 281 houses in various parts of the district are partially damaged as per the information given by the district administration. The loss of crops and other damages are also being estimated.
Meanwhile, a main water pipeline has been damaged near Capitanio and the rainfall has been hampering repair work. So, an interruption in the water supply to the city is a possibility as the water leakage that began in the evening has continued into the night.
In a separate incident near Morgans Gate in the city, the negligence of the city corporation has irked the public and caused them to protest for some time during the late evening. The corporation workers had begun drainage work in the middle of road with out putting up any warning signs.
As a result, a couple who were travelling on a bike, fell into the dug-up hole alerting the public. The couple escaped with minor injuries but the locals who gathered there demanded that the local corporator visit the spot and protested against the negligence of the corporation staff. The arrival of the police helped control the situation and the bike was pulled out of the hole.
The meteorological department on Wednesday July 8 predicted heavy rainfall over the next 48 hours in the district as well as Udupi. So, the district administration has been ordered to extend the leave granted to primary and high schools in the district.
The fire department has formed a special team that can be operational at any time in case of an emergency. The district administration also announced that all the departments are in readiness to deal with any calamity whenever necessary.
Mangalore city recorded the highest rainfall (86.4 mm) on Wednesday with Beltangady (85.6 mm) on its heels. The lowest rainfall was in Sullia taluk (44.4 mm), with Bantwal (64.8 mm), and Puttur (55.5 mm) close by.
The meteorological department has forecasted on Wednesday, 08, that there will be heavy rain fall in 48 hours in the costal district including Udupi. So the district administration has order to continue the leave to primary and high schools in district.

In rain fall, Mangalore city has been registered highest( 86.4mm) on Wednesday. Lowest is registered in sullia taluk(44.4 mm), in Bantwal- 64.8 mm, Belthangady, 85.6, Puttur 55.5 mm registered in meteorological department.
