Mangaluru, Sep 16: ONAM was celebrated at AIMIT, St Aloysius College (Autonomous) on September 13.
Fr Denzil Lobo SJ, director, AIMIT, in his address to the student gathered spoke about the significance of the feast. He enumerated the legend of Maveli, the King, under whose reign there was prosperity, peace and unity. But it was not appreciated by the Suras, who wanted to eliminate the King. Lord Vishnu, in the form of Vamana, the dwarf, crushes the King. He said, “The message is very clear. It is the message of hope. There is always fight between the good and the evil, and though it looks like evil survives, but ultimately the good prevails in the hearts and minds of people.” Fr DEnzil also said that this is a beautiful feast which was also the harvest festival and that it brings people from different communities, irrespective of cast, creed and religion together. “That is the greatest symbol of unity and peace, which all of us should cherish,” he said.
The inaugural address was followed by cultural items by students, ending with tug-of-war between various groups of students.
