Mangalore, Jul 15: Hasty opening of road between Karavali circle and Kankanady circle for traffic without undertaking any repairs on the either sides of the road has proved dangerous to vehicles inching towards the proposed footpath, thanks to Mangalore City Corporation. In such an incident that occurred near Karavali circle here on Wednesday July 15, a man and his car had a miraculous escape from a mishap.

The car driver, who planned to park his car near the circle on the left side was caught unaware of the huge pothole in the parking area, courtesy incomplete works. By the time he was alerted by the public, the two front wheels of the car were already in the pothole. However, a major disaster was averted with timely alert enabling driver escape without any hurt and also great damage to his car.

But, Tiger, police department vehicle had to come to the spot to remove the car from the pothole. Car driver said that he was unaware of the pothole in the area and moreover at the time the road had a busy traffic. Public gathered on the spot however said that the driver had a miraculous escape as it was a four-wheeler. If it was a two-wheeler the life if the rider would have been in danger, they said.

The road was opened for traffic a month ago after its concretization without completing the works on proposed footpath area. The either sides of the road from Karavali circle to Kankanady circle are dotted with huge potholes, especially on the left side. Hence the drivers and riders of the vehicles passing on the road and inching towards the footpath area needs to be very cautious.

A businessman, who owns a shop near Karavali circle, said that he has been demanding the engineer, who looks after the work to fill the sides of the road at least with the mud for time being, but lamented that the authorities have been negligent. The citizens have demanded to take up the repair works immediately further warning of a road blockade with the help of social service organizations.

Very irresponsible act by the MCC/the Road Contractor and deserves strong condemnation. The Contractor should be appropriately dealt with for his negligient and callous act! Adequate warning signs and barricades should always be installed while carrying on such road repairs and/or extensions. This should be specially so when the job is unfinished and kept pending. Thankfully, no life is lost, which is a relief.

Nothing is going to change in Mangalore until we mangaloreans stop thinking about the religion cause. We mangaloreans should be united only then we can root out this corruption. Otherwise mangalore will remain like this only even after 50 years.

Mr. Greg, mangalore / Ireland...if the system of paying compensation was in India, then these potholes would have more than now and these politicians would have made some more money by striking a deal with the affected and all settlements will be outside the court...!!!!!?????

India can never be a developed country. Corruption, politics, bad attitude of people, violence in the name of religion,...etc are leading the country backwards. This kind of system will last forever in this country. Nothing is going to be changed.

Really if people look at these incidents, we cant just blame the corporation for such roads. was the car driver blind when he was driving? it was such a big path hole that anyone one can see. if that driver was really looking at the road and driving, these incidents wouldnt have occured.

Hassle leads to accident. also corporation has to take measures to see through it that such incidents wouldnt take place again. all roads under repair have to be perfectly checked and then let it for usage. even if there is any dangerous holes in roads, corporation has to make it a point to atleast pt up a warning board near that so that accidents like this would be lessened up to a certain extent.

I think the Daiji forum should lay their hands on the concreting contract and see for themselves if all these safety measures are not part and part of the contract. Whether the contractor has to provide a good alternate path for pedestrians and vehicle traffic ( for which they are paid a considerable sum) when they are doing part of the road. And importantly whether they can leave partially finished work for weeks and months ( monsoon excuse) in a disgraceful state. There is a big penalty clause for poor/ shoddy/ unrepaired work in all contracts but then maybe......

MCC is not lawless or irresponsible they are downright corrupt. Has anyone driven from the airport to the city in the last one week it is treacherous. Part of the road has been concreted but kept closed for traffic, the other part is worse than the moon craters. The contractors must be laughing all the way to the bank since they do not put up barricades they do not put up warning markers and they do not give to the citizens a proper alternative route to walk/ drive on. Who is pocketing the money which is paid to all contractors as per the PWD rules. The one- two km stretch between the bridge and Kavoor is a shambles the 300 mtr stretch near the Bondel junction is a mess and as for the "sometime to be completd road divider"I think they are there for vehicles to get damaged only- there is a of at least 10/12 inches between the concrete portion and the once upon a time filled in with mud sections. Is it so difficult for the many bulldozers/ road rollers that are being used for the concrete roadworks to be sent all along the route to level the uneven sections/ fill up with jelly the craters and roadroll these sections. Where are our Councillors- they are either sleeping or do not go around their constituency to see what is the state of the roads. Where are the MCC engineers- sitting at their desk counting their cut or just not bothered about the citizens.

Kudla Shining! The Engineer and responsible department need to be awarded for the repeated system of keeping the sides of the road with minimum one feet step level. Even in poor countries, they finish the roads with edge even and level. it is a curse to Indian roads with unfinished edges. Incompetent (corrupt) people supervising the road construction is the root cause.
