Mangalore, Jul 17: An idol of Lord Shiva installed at Pandeswara Katte in the city was found to have been damaged on Friday July 17. Following this incident, police forces have been deployed in the adjoining areas to keep the situation under control.
The idol suffered some damages at its abdomen region. The idol is made up by fibre and cement. The damage was noticed after several hours after the morning puja was performed to the idol.
A person residing in the neighbourhood noticed the damage and informed the police. At the same time, the residents from nearby areas, who got the information, gathered there, giving rise to apprehension of the situation turning tense.
The idol was found to have developed cracks, apparently due to stone pelting, said a shop owner adjacent to the Katte. He added that he has noticed a mentally retarded person roaming around since some time in the area.
The policemen from Pandeshwar station in the city also suspected that the mentally retarded person would have thrown stones towards the idol. Ramakrishna, sub-inspector in Pandeswara station, who was on the spot, said that they would investigate the incident.
The idol was removed from the spot. As per Hindu customs, damaged idols are not fit to be worshipped.
The Katte is built at the bottom a holy fig tree. The idol of Lord Shiva had been installed on the Katte and puja was also performed everyday. A number of devotees also take part in the puja there in the early morning.
A complaint also has been registered in this regard, at Pandeshwar police station by a member of the committee involved with the administration of the Katte.
