Muslim inmates of Gwalior jail take to Bhagwad Gita

Gwalior, Oct 9 (IANS): Religion does not divide, Religion unites -- this is what Akeel Pathan, a convict of Madhya Pradesh's Gwalior Central Jail believes, and therefore has decided to read the 'Shrimad Bhagwad Gita'.

Pathan has been convicted in a murder case. A Muslim man with an urge to know the Hindu scripture, his zeal may not go down well with those who divide people on the religious lines.

Akeel says that all religions preach good things. He has been reading books in the jail and being a Muslim, his preference has been the books concerning his religion. But, now he has come across the Gita and will read it. He says that he will try to understand the teachings and accept them if he likes them.

Gwalior zone Additional Director General of Police (ADG) Raja Babu Singh has started a campaign to create awareness about the Gita among various sections of the society. He even goes to schools to talk about the "Gita Gyan" with the children. On the day of Dusshera, Singh distributed the copies along with rosary in the jail premises.

Singh said: "Gita has 18 chapters and 700 'shalokas' which can help those who have wavered from the path of righteousness. The inmates are living here because of some bad Karma and by reading Gita, they can overcome many problems like anger and desperation."

"The Gita is not just a religious book, it is a spiritual growth that a human being should accept as the life's constitution. One who goes against this constitution of the country, lands in jail. Similarly, one who violates the spiritual constitution gets stuck in this life-cycle," said Anandeshwar Das Chaitanya, a religious scholar from Vrindavan who spoke about the relevance of Gita before the jail inmates.

Like Akeel, other Muslim inmates have also expressed willingness to read the book and understand the moral.

The Central jail of Gwalior has 3,396 inmates at present, out of which 164 are women. The women inmates have 21 children with them. All the inmates, irrespective of their religion, have shown willingness to read the Gita.

Is Gwalior zone Additional Director General of Police (ADG) Raja Babu Singh is on duty Govt duty or religious duty.

why is he misusing his power. If this ADG is so interested in preaching religion, he should resign from his duty.

He is being paid to extend his duty as protector of public and not as preacher. Priosoners belong to various religions and hence there should not be prefernce for one religion.

Its ok to study holy books of all religions which never teach to do bad things especially mob lynching. It is not mentioned in Gita to kill people from non hindu community.

Hence, it will be better if Gita is distributed among Hindus also and let them understand true teaching and not to follow hate mongers mainly politicians.

Hard core criminals & terrorists have no religion nor fear of God.
Akeel says that all religions preach good things. If that is the truth why he did not follow Allah's word from Koran for so many years/
All in anticipation of considering a good conduct and some concession in jail term.

Principles of two major religions are different from Hinduism, so lets not say all religions preach same.
There would had been much peace in this world if everyone read Bhagvadgita in true spirit. To read Bhagvadgita one also should have Bhagvadprerna otherwise he may carry this holy book all his life time & never read till his end. Bhagvadgita is not book for Hindus, actually Hindus have accepted the Gods words to navigate themselves from the samsarasagara and merge into god. Thus getting released from the bonds of birth & death and attain Moksh.

how can you say that it is every bodies duty? India is a democratic country & it is people's wish to read or not. at the same time we should not use the holy books for justifying any illegal activities.

Good for everyone. Bhagavadgita preaches a path for a good life for human beings. This is not related to any religion.

there is no relation between who is ruling and the Rss-infested police cadres. These are done by inside hands which even the administration will not know. Just like the hizbul group

i think you have not understood what I am trying to say. This is same like you people are accused of converting people. Here they are forced by the police cadres to study the Hindu holy book.

Hope you got my point. If one wants to do it by will no one will oppose.

you are totally wrong. in north india there are so many muslim people read bhagwad gita & participate in pooja/festivals at temple. at the same time hindu people also participate in muslim festival. in this case also there is no force from police. if it was the case then cong govt dismiss this police officer. we should come out from this communal world then we can see the beauty of this earth.
