New Delhi, Oct 9: Former External Affairs Minister and senior Congress leader Salman Khurshid declared it would be difficult to procure a win in the upcoming Maharashtra and Haryana assembly elections. Khurshid went ahead and even claimed that the future of Congress in politics was uncertain.
Khurshid believes the reason for the high attrition rate of leaders in Congress is because it has still not 'come to terms' with its defeat in the Lok Sabha elections 2019.
As per Khurshid, the party has still not analyzed the reasons for the loss in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The leader at the time, Rahul Gandhi has now quit his post and Sonia Gandhi has taken over as the interim president. Khurshid has called this move the biggest problem in Congress, where the leader himself has walked away.
Although, Khurshid added that Rahul Gandhi still retains his allegiance to the party.
When the results were announced in May, Congress procured only 52 of the 542 seats, while BJP ended up with a landslide victory. Now, amidst the upcoming Maharashtra-Haryana assembly polls to be held on Oct 21, Congress chief in Haryana, Ashok Tanwar has quit. Tanwar quit following a difference with the party's leadership over the choice of candidates. Tanwar's resignation rendered a severe jolt to Congress as he was the main campaigners against BJP in Haryana.
Meanwhile, in Maharashtra Sanjay Nirupam, one of the prime Congress leaders threatened to quit the party after his recommendations of nominees for the polls were rejected by the party.
