Panaji, Aug 3: Dr Maurilio Furtado, the well known doctor from the village Varca-Salcete, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 2, after a brief illness. He was 88 years.
Dr Maurilio’s contribution towards Goa has been immense. During the Portuguese era he was a Medical Officer C N N Lisbon Compania Nacianal de Navigacao.
After 1961, he was the 1st Sarpanch of Orlim-Varca Village Panchayat. He was also the 1st MLA of Benaulim Constituency. He played a key role in saving Goa from the merger into Maharashtra. He was a strong United Goan Party Stalwart. Dr Maurilio was a multi facted personality of many talents.
He served the people of Goa as an unique Doctor for nearly six and half decades with his speciality as ‘Ferdam Dotor’ at his legendry ‘SOPO’.
He was an ardent animal and nature lover. He leaves behind his children & grandchildren.
