Mangalore, Aug 5: It has since been confirmed that a second year MBBS student of Kasturba Medical College and Hospital here, has been infected with swine flue. This confirmation has come after the medical tests.

The blood samples of the student had been sent to National Institute of Communicable Diseases, New Delhi two days ago. On Tuesday August 4 evening, the report was received. The report has confirmed that the student has contracted this fearful endemic, informed Dakshina Kannada district health and family welfare officer, Dr Jagannath.

The student of Malaysian origin had visited her native place, when the college had a five-week holiday. On her return to Bangalore on August 1, symptoms of the swine flu had been detected. After she arrived here, her blood samples had been forwarded for investigation.

The student is presently quarantined in a special room of a private hospital in the city. Doctors attending to the student said, her fever has receded and she is recovering. In the past, swine flu symptoms had been found in a couple of people but they were not confirmed as cases of swine flu.

Please dont create phobia/panicky situation. swine flu is usually not fatal except in immunocompromised patients, comparable to any flu. but take precautions, avoid crowds, wear a mask if visiting a hospital treating swine-flu. Also note that pork does not trasmit swine-flu.

This disease does not require any latest technology to treat unless secondary infections, This is treated just like other common flu with Tamiflu. It needs only isolation of confirmed cases.

Dear mangaloreans dont be afraid of swine flue. It can be cured successfully only people who have affected with swin flue and has secondary infection will have serious effect. But it still can be treated. And country''s like India with soaring temperature there is less chance of spreading the flue beacuse its a winter flue. Just use universal precautions and avoid crowded areas.

I cant imagine the samples have to be sent to Delhi for confirmation of the virus. Why isnt there a place nearer home for this? It is very dangerous, as in the interim the virus until confirmed could spread around.... Ministry of Health, if this becomes a full blown pandemic down south, I think a place nearer home should be the rule of the day.
