Nation-Wide Strike Cripples Banking Operations in Karnataka

Agencies

Bangalore, Aug 6: Banking operations in Karnataka were paralysed with employees of Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) banks joining a two-day nation-nwide strike.

The employees of the State Bank of India (SBI) stayed away from attending the office. They also held demonstrations in front of their zonal office, pressing for wage hikes and other demands.

All India State Bank Officers Association's Secretary K S Manadapur told UNI that response for the bank strike was total, as all banking operations in the State had come to a halt.

Manadapur said employees of various nationalised banks held protest meetings and demonstrations near State Bank of Mysore headquarters in the heart of the city to protest against the Government for not accepting their long-pending demands.

The operations of the clearing house were also disrupted due to strike and the situation would remain the same tomorrow. About 50,000 employees of the nationalised banks in the State were participating in the strike.

He said the leaders of the United Forum of Banks Union (UFBU) would meet at Chennai on August 11 and chalk out a future course of action, if the Government did not heed to the demands of the bank employees.

The employees of the private banks, including Catholic Syrian, Federal and Lakshmi Vilas, extended their support to the nationwide strike in the State.

Those critizing the strike should go to a remote branch and work there and see the inconvenience caused to the bank men, then they will realise whether the strike is justified or not. To take one AOD the Bank officer has to go to the borrower hundred time and plead with him to sign an AOD. Similarly for recovery of loan, he has to plead as if the Manager/Officer is at fault.

To add fuel to the fire, the local goons/so called party workers harass the staff and many a time threaten the Bank Officers with dire consequences. Work in such a situation and see whether wage hike is necessary or not.

Circumstances have forced the bankmen to go on strike. While all the other segment of the society like Govt. Servants, both Central & state, Army men, and others from different fields have secured good raise through VI pay commission, bankers are totally neglected. Today almost every bank branch faces staff shortages and bank officers work with all the strain and stress with fear of a democlus sword hanging on their head which may come down any time. Bankmen too deserve a fair deal..
