Mangalore, Aug 8: With the presence of swine flu virus having been confirmed through the testing of the nasal swab of a patient on Friday August 7, the number of confirmed swine flu cases in the district has risen to five.
On Friday, another suspected swine flu patient got admitted into a hospital, taking the suspected swine flu patients in the district to ten. District family and health welfare department officials said, the tenth suspected swine flu patient is a student and that he used to stay with a patient who has been diagnosed with swine flu, a few days ago.
In view of the increasing incidence of swine flu cases in the district, a review meeting was conducted under the presidentship of the in-charge deputy commissioner Prabhakar Sharma on Friday, which was attended by officials of the health and other related departments, apart from representatives of medical colleges.
Sharma directed the officials to take all possible steps to contain the spread of H1N1 virus. He asked other medical colleges and bigger hospitals to set apart rooms and make available medical care all 24-hours of the day, to provide treatment to patients with swine flu symptoms. He explained, that the masks, hand gloves and other equipments needed by the doctors and nurses attending such patients, would be provided by the administration. The number of beds set apart for swine flu patients has been increased to ten in Wenlock Hospital and the treatment expenditure would be borne by the government, he added.
Zilla panchayat chief executive officer P Shivshankar put forth the suggestion that the students of foreign origin and the Indian students, who return after visiting other countries, should be provided accommodation in separate residences or hostels for a few days, as the swine flu cases in the district were detected in students who came back after visiting other countries.
Survey officer of health department, Dr Rajesh, said that all the five confirmed swine flu patients are being treated and the patient in whom the disease was detected first, is being treated since four days and that the patient has shown good progress. He also said that instead of cases being investigated and published only after Manipal KMC Hospital and the laboratory at Pune confirmed the results, henceforth KMC Manipal would directly announce the results. This would speed up the time required for confirmation of the disease to just about 12 hours, he added.
