Mangaluru, Oct 26: Torrential rains that were experienced in Udupi district for the last two days have taken away two lives since Thursday evening. 

In the first incident, Sulochana (42), wife of Kurkalu village, Kaup taluk resident Chandrashekhar slipped and fell in water-filled canal when she was crossing it, and died. 

She had gone to the fields at 3.30 pm to fetch fodder. Her family people went searching for her as she did not return even after 5.30 pm and found her dead body at about 8 pm a little away, said Kaup tahsildar Mohammed Isaac. It is suspected that she fell when she was returning with the fodder.

Meanwhile, an auto rickshaw driver, Ravindra Kulal( 38) got stuck under a tree that was falling on a house at Santajeddu, Kukkehalli gram panchayat limits at about 9 pm and died on the spot. Ravindra Kulal who was returning home in his auto rickshaw had stopped his vehicle as it was raining heavily and was standing on the sit out of the house belonging to Diwakar Shetty as that family was known to him. As the tree fell on the house, a branch of the tree hit and killed him, said Kukkehalli village accountant, Guruprasad. 

Ravindra Kulal has left behind wife and three years old daughter. It is said that the fall of tree has caused a loss of Rs 35,000 to the house of Diwakar Shetty. 

Reports of widespread loss and damage to houses and property due to incessant rain during the last three days are being received. Damages amounting to Rs 40,000 to the house of Saku Shetty, Kuthyar village, Rs 50,000 to the house of Raghu R Devadiga in Bada village and Rs 30,000 to the house of Shakuntala in Padu village are reported. 

Water in Car Street in Udupi 

Car Street is inundated with knee deep standing water due to rain. Water has entered Chandramouleeshwar temple which is at a lower gradient. Water has stagnated in front of the temple and inside. 

Bantwal 

Several houses in Bantwal and throughout the coast are damaged in the downpour in the taluk since Thursday night. 

“The houses of Sajipamooda village residents Bhathish, Aliabba, Avvamma and Idkidu village resident Suresh Ameen have been partly damaged. The house of Sankappa Gowda is damaged due to fall of a coconut tree, houses of Salethur village residents, Ananda Poojary and Sundara Poojary are partly damaged. The house of Abdul Khader is severely damaged. 

Houses of Vitla Padnoor village residents Babu Purusha and Kolnad village resident Vasanth are partly damaged while houses of Alike village resident Shashidhar and Ajjibettu resident Sriyala are severely damaged,” states a release from Bantwal taluk office. The boundary wall of Vittal Kasba village resident Jayanta has collapsed. 

Turbulence at sea has increased and sea erosion has been reported from various places. Many boats which went out for fishing rushed back because of the inclement weather condition. The storm is now moving towards Oman via Ratnagiri and it may take a couple of days for it to calm down, sources said. The department has sounded orange alert for coastal Karnataka on Saturday. 

19 fishermen aboard Raj Kiran and M A Maheel boats which went on fishing trip from Malpe and Mangaluru ports respectively are facing danger as both the boats were stranded near Karwar due to technical problems since Friday evening. The deputy director of fisheries has requested the Coast Guard to rescue these fishermen. The Coast Guard and the fishermen have rushed to the spot to help the stranded fishermen, it is learnt.
