Fine, jail for selling firecrackers during Diwali in Dubai

Dubai, Oct 26 (IANS): Anyone caught selling fireworks can be jailed for up to three months, or handed down a 5,000 dirham ($1,361) fine in Dubai during the festival of Diwali, a media report said on Saturday.

The Dubai Police, however, have noted that the practice has largely been curbed as a result of awareness initiatives held among the community, the Khaleej Times said in the report.

Event organisers will require prior permission of the Dubai Police and Dubai Municipality before using the firecrackers.

Over the last few years, Dubai Municipality inspectors have been cracking down on the illegal sale of fireworks during Diwali.

The police have noted that fireworks can threaten the safety of both people and property, and cause material damage as well as environmental pollution.

In the past, there have been cases where violators found stocking firecrackers were arrested and referred to courts.

In 2015, the police seized 23 tonnes of firecrackers, compared to 28 tonnes in 2014 and 13 tonnes in 2013.

any historians believe that fireworks originally were developed in the second century B.C. in ancient Liuyang, China. It is believed that the first natural "firecrackers" were bamboo stalks that when thrown in a fire, would explode with a bang because of the overheating of the hollow air pockets in the bamboo. The Chinese believed these natural "firecrackers" would ward off evil spirits.

Sometime during the period 600-900 AD, legend has it that a Chinese alchemist mixed potassium nitrate, sulfur and charcoal to produce a black, flaky powder – the first “gunpowder”. This powder was poured into hallowed out bamboo sticks (and later stiff paper tubes) forming the first man made fireworks. Fireworks made their way to Europe in the 13th century and by the 15th century they were widely used for religious festivals and public entertainment. The Italians were the first Europeans to manufacture fireworks and European rulers were especially fond of the use of fireworks to “enchant their subjects and illuminate their castles on important occasions.”

So literally, fireworks were not at all a part of our culture.

Don't know how bursting of crackers and causing nuisance and both noise and environmental pollution is related to culture or religion. Diwali is a festival of lights, so why not beautify your house with diyas and lights and celebrate it peacefully, with pujas, lights, good food and reunions of families and friends ? That will carry a lot of meaning, instead of causing misery to the animals around and also old people at home. Why not donate this money to worthy causes instead of burning it?

Crackers are irrelevant for cities. Because there rats snakes cockroaches and humans live together.

But in our villages we like to chase away the snakes, rats and few gulamas by fire crackers.

    Happy Deepavali.

Fireworks not only cause sound and smoke pollution, but also cause many injuries.

Some injuries can be life-threatening and/or fatal.

Only the licensed people should be allowed to use the firecrackers. The UAE police is doing a great job on the matter.

Hope India eventually wakes up and bans the firecrackers use by the unlicensed members of the public - regardless of the occasion.

Very good decision taken by Dubai authorities for environment pollution, After spoiling environment in India both in noise and pollution, some wants to spread their culture to clean cities of other world , Dubai is not like Indian cities , Unlike our bakts, Emiratis are well organized people, they have rules, awareness, culture and hygiene where most Indians are lacking,
